Özet (Çeviri)

In Turkey, after the 1980s military coup, there was an important period, in which the status of women started to come to the fore as a question raised in society. At this time, feminist groups started feminist movements like the women's movement in Europe and USA (Arat 1994; Sirman 1989; Tekeli 1986). This women's movement consisted of the chattering classes: those who have a profession, are also living in the cities, and are called the middle class (Marshall 2005). In addition, unlike previous movements, this women's movement not only focused on the violation of rights in public space, but also focused on the violation of rights in the private space. Namely, the role of women in society, and domestic violence against women were not discussed previously, while these issues played a hugely important role in motivating women to start women's movements. In the 1990s, feminism and women's movement started to become institutionalised in Turkey. These movements were impressed by international women national gains in gender equality. While women worked as activists in street protests and campaigns, they also came together in non-governmental organisations. For example, at this time, women's research centres were established at the University of Istanbul. In addition, the Women's Library and Information Centres Foundation, Flying broom and the Association for the Support of Women Candidates (KADER) exemplify how women's groups had begun to become institutionalised. At the same time, women's civil society organisations started to play a role in international non-governmental organisations, intergovernmental forums and fund-raising activities. According to Marshall (2003), women would like to participate in Turkish politics. In addition, they started to found new funds with the help of networks in other countries; i.e. women's organisation, apart from their countries' governments. Ilkkaracan (2007) states that women have shown great success in respect of human rights gains in the last decade. This success is the result of dedicated action. Also, starting the European Union process (3 April 2005) played a role in this positive change to the structure of women's movements. Since this date, the number of women's non-governmental organisations has increased by 62% in Turkey's three major cities (Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara). The women's movement diffusion process has influenced women living in the West-East and East of Turkey. They have also started to question their position and gender equality. Kurdish women activists focus on gender equality in society as the first main issue of discussion. Then, they develop feminist theories regarding what women have to be in every area of society, and then labour to convert theories into real life practice. In Kurdish society, Kurdish politics have a significant role in improving women's status in society. In addition, this political structure studies the possible provision of gender equality between women and men. It can be given as an example that the HDP (People's Democracy Party) established women's commissions, and women's organisations in each municipality, to provide gender equality in Kurdish society.
