Education is one of the major issues in Turkey as it is in most areas of the world. South east Turkey is one of the least developed regions in Turkey. Despite major demand, very few school buildings are present. Education is the major step into civilization and youth is the core of a society. A school environment that is adaptive to its climate conditions and the occupant activities is an ideal starting point for a bright and educated youth to grow. Vernacular housing architecture of Mardin has been studied for many decades. There is no doubt that the architectural and environmental attributes of these houses would inspire contemporary buildings. The focus of this dissertation is to bring the valuable characteristics of Mardin vernacular architecture into primary school environments. Investigating how these houses have occupied diverse cultures for centuries is the key to open the door to sustainability and adaptivity of school environments.
