The purpose of this thesis is to study the changes in labor force participation of women across occupation, industry and regions and their possible effects on men's wages and men's labor force participation in the United States from 1986 to 1995. Change in participation of men and women in the labor force has been shown across industries, occupations and regions using the data from the Current Population Surveys of 1986 and 1995. Men and women are divided into high-skill and low-skill groups, based on their position in the wage distribution. Then the changes in the participation of women in the work force and that of men in unskilled labor is compared to fınd out whether there is a strong influence of the changes in labor force participation of highly skilled women on the wages of unskilled men across regions. The empirical results show that highly skilled females and less-skilled males are not very close substitutes, based on their percentage across occupations. Changes in participation of highly skilled women in the labor force relative to unskilled men do not have a strong influence on the wages of unskilled men relative to wages of highly skilled men. Results also show that the participation in the work force of less-skilled poorly paid women is indeed related to relative wages of less-skilled or low-wage men, suggesting that they are either strong complements or substitutes. But occupational share data suggest they are probably complements.
