Özet
Tasvir sanatında kentlerin betimlenmesi,Neolitik Dönem'den beri bilinen bir olgudur. Kentler, ait olma duygusuyla bir duvar resminde, bir haritada topografik detayları ve gerçek yapılarıyla, tarihsel olayları anlatırken belge niteliğinde tasvir edilirken aynı anda hayali, mitolojik, ütopik unsurlarla birleşerek de betimlenmektedir. İnsanlar için doğdukları, yaşadıkları ve öldükleri yer aynı öldükten sonra gideceklerin, düşündükleri yer gibi önemli ve kutsaldır.Yaratılan kutsal kent olgusu özellikle dini inanışlarla beslenen cennet kavramıyla doğrudan ilişkilidir hatta birçok yerde olgunun ta kendisidir. Kentlerin, kiliselerin en kıymetli ve görülen yerinde Hıristiyanlığın en kutsal kişileri ve sembolleriyle tasvir edilmesiyle cemaate verilen bir mesaj vardır.Bu mesaj inananların ibadetiyle bu cennete kavuşabilecekleridir.Erken Bizans Dönemi tasvir sanatında en çok tasviredilen kentin Kudüs olması tesadüf değildir. Kudüs üç din tarafından kutsal kabul edilen, her dinin özel ibadet yerlerinin olduğu yüzyıllardır değişmeyen ritüellerin yaşandığı bir kenttir.Tanrının evi kavramı görsel olarak değişse de hep vardır, inananlarla yükselen istikbal kent tasvirleriyle yaşatılmaktadır.

The depiction of cities in the art of depiction has been a known phenomenon since the Neolithic era. Cities, coupled with mythological, utopian and imaginary elements, are depicted in a wall painting with a sense of belonging, on a map with topographical details and real structures as well as documents describing historical events. For people, the place where they are born, live and die is as sacred and important as the place that they think they will go to after they die. The concept of sacred/holy city is closely and especially linked with the concept of heaven which is nourished by religious beliefs; in fact, it is the actual phenomenon itself in many places. As such, there is an intended message conveyed to the congregation through the depiction of cities in the most precious and visible parts of the church with the involvement of the most sacred people and symbols of Christianity. The aforesaid message is intended for those of believers who think they will be able to go to heaven thanks to their religious services. It is not a coincidence that Jerusalem is reported to be the city having been depicted the most during Early Byzantine. It is of utmost importance that the city of Jerusalem is a sacred place to a number of religious traditions, including Judaism, Islam and Christianity with each religion having their own houses of worship, where rituals have remained the same over the years. The concept of House of God, albeit some apparent visual changes, has always been around and the advancing future, along with the believers, is kept alive by the depiction of cities.
