Prof.Dr. Baki VAROL Asst.prof.Dr. Gök sen in ESELLER In this research, petrol ogical investigation has been carried out on the upper Cretaceous aged Mardin car bonates and the overlying Karaboğaz and Saymdere Forma tion in A,B and C wells drilled at Çukur t as oil field, Adıyaman area. With the data obtained by polarizan mic roscope studies and with the aid of electrical logs ÎGR and SONIC), Derdere, Karababa, Karaboğaz and Saymdere Formations are divided into 5, 5, 2 and 1 micro- facies respectively. Then correlation of these facies between the wells had been carried out. In the study area, three sedimentary cycles had been determined. The beginning conditions of the first cycle were not known, because the studied wells did not reach the necessary depths. However, towards the end of the cycle it gained a regressive character. This cycle was completed with a shallow marine carbonate deposition The number 6 and 11 micro- facies which were deposited in deep marine conditions revealed that the second and the third sedimentary cycles started as a transgressive phase. The second cycle started deposition in a silled platform and the deposition ended in a shallow marine conditions by gaining a regressive character. The third cycle started deposition in an environment controlled by upwelling system and the deposition continued in deep marine conditions. In the di agenesis 'chapter, the different diage- netic processes effecting the relevant units were exa mined and their effect on the rocks were discussed. The-VI- most effective diagenetic process was the dolomitiz ati on The dolomiti zat ion mechanism showed differences in dif ferent units. For example, in the Derdere Formation, dolomiti zati an was realized with a mixing zone system, whereas in the Sabunsuyu Formation, in addition to this kind of dolomiti zati an, dolomites resulted by hypersa- line water effect are also present. The other diagenetic processes seen in the Upper Cretaceous units are cemen tation, silicif ication, micritization and neomorphism. One reverse and two normal faults effecting the studied wells were identified by electrical log and pet- rological investigations, and a structural correlation had been carried out by the aid of these faults. In order to identify the mineralogical composi tion, clay content and the clay type of Hardin carbo nate and the Karaboğaz Formation hole rock and clay frac tion analyses had been carried out on the core and the cutting samples off Cukurtas-B well. With the obtained data the mineralogical graphs of the units were plotted. As a result of interpretations, the high gamma ray readings in the Karababa- A member and the Karaboğaz Formation resulted not from high clay content, but from the high concentrations of the radioactive minerals pre served in the organic matter.
