Özet
This thesis is the first particularising study of literary responses to National Socialism produced between 1933 and 1962 by the remarkably numerous German-Jewish writers who settled in East Germany after 1945. The Introduction elucidates their motives for choosing to live in the SOZ/GDR, before demonstrating how their generally Communist sympathies, and literary-political circumstances in that state, limited their potential for being 'Jewish authors', according to Peter Gay's useful criteria for Jewish authorship. Subsequent chapters illuminate additional factors circumscribing their depiction of the Nazi era, including the Communist interpretation of 'fascism' and the role of editors and censors in ensuring that publications complied with this interpretation and befitted a mostly non-Jewish audience. After Chapter Four has outlined the prevalent tendencies in East German representations of Nazi anti-Semitism, Chapter Five explores exceptional features of the treatment of this subject by several Jewish authors. It argues that major writers, including Friedrich Wolf and Arnold Zweig, and less prominent ones, like Walter Kaufmann, displayed a marked interest in depicting Jewish reactions to fascism. However, their own politicised perspectives are shown often to have led them to portray passive Jewish victims in a particularly critical manner, while commending Jews aligned on the Left. Three case-studies supplement these overview-chapters. Hedda Zinner's plays are presented as typifying the treatment of Jewish experience by ultra-dogmatic Communists. A close-reading of (largely unpublished) prose by Rudolf Leonhard highlights his preoccupation with the necessity of a Jewish resistance to persecution. Finally, Stephan Hermlin's story about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, 'Die Zeit der Gemeinsamkeit', is analysed in detail. Although these close-readings evince attitudes and beliefs shared by many Jewish writers in the early GDR, they also demonstrate the variety of ways in which individual Jewish authors confronted the Nazi past, a variety which previous scholarship has tended to overlook.
