Modellemesi yapılan sistem için Abiyotik Element Tükenme Potansiyeli (AETP), Abiyotik Fosil Tükenme Potansiyeli (AFTP), Asidifikasyon Potansiyeli (AP), Ötrofikasyon Potansiyeli (ÖP), Tatlı Su Ekotoksisite Potansiyeli (TSEP), Küresel Isınma Potansiyeli (KIP), İnsan Toksisite Potansiyeli (İTP), Deniz Suyu Ekotoksisite Potansiyeli (DSEP), Ozon Tabakası Tükenme Potansiyeli (OTTP), Fotokimyasal Ozon Oluşumu Potansiyeli (FOOP) ve Karasal Ekotoksisite Potansiyeli (KEP) çevresel etki kategorileri baz alınarak çevresel etki değerlendirmesi gerçekleştirilmiştir.
The environmental problems caused by the increasing population and industrialization have created an environmental awareness both in academia and society. In addition, despite the increasing resource consumption, due to the increasing population and industrialization, resources being limited, increased the importance of sustainability and recovery. Thus, environmental impact studies have become popular in recent years. With this study, the environmental impacts of a pilot-scale plant producing Volatile Fatty Acid (VFA) from waste in Stockholm, Sweden are evaluated using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. Anaerobic digestion process is used in the facility established for this purpose. The methanogenesis stage of the anaerobic digestion process is inhibited to produce VFA-rich liquid production more efficiently. The waste used as raw material of the system, consists of a mixture of pre-digestion sludge and food waste taken from two different treatment plants. It is assumed that the waste generated after digestion is sent to the Mälarenergi AB sludge incineration facility. Electricity and chemical supply, anaerobic digestion process and sludge incineration is included as system boundaries of the project. Raw material preparation and product characterization processes are excluded. Therefore, the LCA study was carried out with a gate-to-gate approach. The energy needed in the system is provided from the Swedish grid electricity network. It is acknowledged that the chemicals used were supplied by Biotage Sweden AB. The amount of chemicals and adding periods are calculated. The system is designed in such a way that there is no methane gas output. Hence, methane release has neglected and not included in the system boundaries. There are four different cases (runs) in the system under investigation. These cases are determined by different operating conditions. Namely, Case-1 is the case that the pH is adjusted to 5 and Case-2 is pH adjusted to 10. In these two cases, the retention time was determined as 7 days. Although Case-3 and Case-4 are the cases where pH was not controlled, the retention time of Case-3 was 7 days and 10 days in Case-4. The most experimentally efficient case is determined as Case-2. But experimental efficiency is not enough to find out the most environmentally benign one. For this purpose, a LCA study was conducted on these four cases for obtaining the environmental impacts. The data obtained from the operators of the system is used as an input for modelling with GaBi Professional 7.3.3 software. Ecoinvent database and CML2001 method were used. The inputs used in the model consist of mixed sludge formed as a mix of pre-digestion sludge and food waste in certain proportions, electricity requirement, and use of chemicals and the transport of these chemicals to the facility. The output of the system consists of VFA rich liquid and waste sludge. Abiotic Element Depletion Potential (AEDP), Abiotic Fossil Depletion Potential (AFDP), Acidification Potential (AP), Eutrophication Potential (EP), Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity Potential (FAEP), Global Warming Potential (GWP), Human Toxicity Potential (HTP), Marine Ecotoxicity Potential (MEP), Ozone Layer Depletion Potential (OLDP), Photochemical Ozone Formation Potential (POFP) and Terrestrial Ecotoxicity Potential (TEP) environmental impact categories were evaluated. According to the results, for each case it was evaluated that the most contributing factor to the environmental impacts was the total energy demand. The other reason that follows is the use of chemicals. In the model applied, the energy requirement was met from the Swedish grid electricity. In Case-1, only HCl was used for pH adjustment, whereas in Case-2, HCl and NaOH were used. According to the results the case with the highest environmental impact was Case-4 and the case with the lowest environmental impact was Case-2. The results obtained from the system which the Swedish electricity grid is used as an energy source are then compared with the results of the models created using different energy sources. Other energy sources examined are renewable energy sources of solar energy and wind energy. These selected energy sources were modelled for each case and the energy source with the lowest impacts was evaluated. As a result, it is evaluated that the total energy requirement of the system, regardless of the energy source, has the most effect on the environment. In category-based evaluations, it was determined that the least harmful energy source for the environment was found as the wind energy and the most harmful one is the solar energy on the environmental impact categories other than OLDP and GWP. For OLDP and GWP impact categories, the highest impacts were obtained when Swedish electricity grid is used. When the cases are quantitatively compared, for Swedish grid electricity from the most environmentally friendly case to the least environmentally friendly case, Case-2, Case-3, Case-1, Case-4, respectively. For solar energy, the most environmentally friendly case is Case-2 and the worst one is Case-4. The last energy source that compared with others is wind energy and when the model created with wind energy is examined, the highest environmental impact in all environmental impact categories except OLDP comes from Case-4 as in other energy sources. Only in the OLDP impact category, it was determined that the highest impact comes from Case-2 and the lowest impact comes from Case-3. Considering all the investigations, it is clearly seen that the most environmentally friendly case is Case-2. In addition, considering the category-based evaluations, it has been determined that the most environmentally friendly energy source is wind energy. Therefore, it is considered that the system in Sweden, which is operated to produce VFA-rich liquid, should be run under operating conditions where the pH is 10 and the retention time is 7 days, both in terms of experimental efficiency and environmental effects. Considering that the most important source in the system is electricity consumption, operating the facility under the working conditions specified by wind energy will be the most suitable in terms of environmental friendliness.
