Özet (Çeviri)
As of today, the teachings of Rumi, Ibn al-Arabi and other Sufi mystics are enjoying a revival in the United States. Especially ecstatic poems of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi have sold hundreds of thousands of copies recently, making him a best-selling poet not only in the United States, but also around the globe. However, the roots of the American fascination for Sufism reach as deep as the nineteenth century when American transcendentalism appeared as an expression within Romanticism as a literary movement. This study aims to compare two seemingly unrelated philosophical movements, Sufism and American transcendentalism and to prove the impact of Islamic Mysticism on the work of American transcendentalist poets in terms of how 'pantheistic' view of Divine Unity in Islamic mysticism (Sufism) affected them and how they transcend physical existence in nature in order to see the truth of the universe, which is, for all of them, the unity with God. My motivation for this study is based on similarities between these two religious and philosophical movements even though significant discrepancies exist between them. My paper lays emphasis on the concept of pantheism in American transcendentalism as well as on its Sufi's correspondent, wahdat al-wujud and how the 'pantheistic' view of Divine Unity is reflected in Islamic Mysticism and American transcendentalism. Two religious and philosophical movements argue about omnipresence and omnipotence of God and in this point nature plays a crucial role as God's perfect creation. I am hoping that this interdisciplinary study will demolish barriers between fields and encourage cooperation and ties among various fields of knowledge in a new era dominated by globalization and the consolidation of international transfers of knowledge have been dominating for a while.
