Özet
Bu tez çalışması drama etkinliklerinin İngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen çocukların yabancı dil öğrenmeye yönelik motivasyon, kaygı ve tutumları üzerindeki etkisini araştırmayı ve hem öğretmenin hem de öğrencilerin drama etkinlikleriyle İngilizce öğrenme/öğretme konusundaki algılarını ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma kontrol gruplu deneysel desende tasarlanmış olup kontrol grubunda 21, deney grubunda ise 22 ilkokul dördüncü sınıf öğrencisi yer almıştır. Çalışma boyunca deney grubunda 10 drama etkinliği uygulanırken, kontrol grubu süregelen programa devam etmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında hem nicel hem de nitel veriler kullanılmıştır. Nicel veriler için“Duyuşsal Hedefler Ölçeği”her iki grupta ön test ve son test olarak uygulanırken nitel veriler ise yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme soruları ile deney grubundaki gönüllü öğrenciler ve öğrenmenden toplanmıştır. Nicel verilerle yapılan analizlerde Wilcoxon işaretli sıralar testi ve Mann-whitney U testleri kullanılırken nitel veriler için betimsel içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Hem grupların ön test ve son test puanları hem de deney ve kontrol gruplarının son test puanları karşılaştırıldığında motivasyon, kaygı ve yabancı dil öğrenmeye ve hedef kültüre yönelik tutumlar açısından anlamlı bir fark olmadığı görülmüştür. Öte yandan, araştırmanın nitel kısmı, deney grubundaki öğrencilerin drama etkinlikleri yaparken kendilerini rahat, güvende ve dolayısıyla daha az kaygılı hissettiklerini, derste aktif katılım gösterdiklerini ve İngilizce dersine ve öğrenmeye ilişkin olumlu tutuma sahip olduklarını ortaya koymuştur.

This study investigates the effect of drama activities on young EFL learners' motivation, anxiety, and attitudes towards learning a foreign language and to find out both the teacher's and the students' perceptions about learning/teaching English with drama activities in the Turkish EFL context. Designed as a pretest-posttest experimental research, this study included 43 4th grade primary EFL students: 21 in the control group and 22 in the experimental group. The experimental group was exposed to 10 drama activities throughout the study while the control group was instructed with the regular program. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from the participants for this study. The Primary EFL Affective Objectives Scale was administered as a pretest and posttest in both groups for the quantitative data, while voluntary students from the experimental group and the teacher were interviewed via semi-structured interview questions for the qualitative part. The quantitative data were analyzed through Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann-whitney U test, whereas a descriptive content analysis was conducted with the qualitative data. The comparisons of the pre-test and post-test scores across and within the groups have shown no significant difference in the students' motivation, anxiety, or attitudes towards foreign language learning and the target culture. On the other hand, the qualitative part of the study revealed that the students in the experimental group felt relaxed, safe and less anxious and showed active participation in the lessons while doing drama activities, and they had positive attitudes towards English lessons and learning English.
