Resistance training is very common not only amongst adults but also among young athletes taking part in various athletics sports such as soccer among others. Such individuals undertake resistance training with the primary purpose of increasing their performance levels in the various sports disciplines. The researcher was interested in establishing empirical evidence quantifying the extent to which resistance training helps young children improve their performance in athletic disciplines. The focus of the study was thus on young children aged between 6 and 18 years, who participate in various types of resistance training. Two research questions were set to be answered; the first questioned quantified the extent to which resistance training affects the performance of young athletes while the second question identified the risks and injuries associated with resistance training that could drastically affect the performance of young athletes. To answer the above two questions, the researcher used a systematic literature review methodology and adopted a particular search strategy that was implemented on three databases namely PubMed, MetSearch, and Google Scholar, and searched for articles published between 2015 and 2019. The literature search strategy results in five articles that were analyzed using meta-analysis techniques to answer the above questions. Concerning the first question, the results of the meta-analysis indicated that resistance training increases the performance of young athletes. For instance, evidence was provided that it decreases 50-m swim time (-2.0%) while it increases asymmetric straight-arm pull-down (+21.9%), 3 kg medicine ball throws (+8.1%), countermovement jump height (+5.1%), vertical countermovement jump (+6.6%), horizontal Cardiff Metropolitan University |Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences | Effects of Resistance Trainings on Physical Performance x countermovement jump (+7.9%), 20-cm drop jump reactive strength (+36.1%), maximal kicking velocity (+10.1%), and running economy (+3.7%). Concerning the second question, resistance training was found to be associated with the risks of the separation of the epiphyseal plate, Salter-Harris type 1 fracture, early physeal closure, limb length anomalies, soft tissue injuries, and trunk injuries, and lumbar spine pain, which all affect the performance of the young athletes.
