Depression, despite being one of the most known psychological phenomena by the general public, is still largely obscure to us. There are many theories that strive to explain this debilitating condition in how it manifests itself. In this study, we have explored these theories in a healthy population, and provided a different approach to depression symptoms, where we take into account the peripheral elements surrounding depression that are not usually bundled in with the symptoms of depression, but are hypothesized to be contributing factors. We have chosen to measure rumination; continuous thoughts of life problems, metacognition; beliefs about negative thoughts, mental resilience; adaptation to adversity and self complexity; independency of self concepts. With 173 participants from a healthy population, these measurements were tested with multiple linear regression to see how much they could predict depression symptoms. The results were significant and our data shows that 60% of the variance in depression symptoms can be predicted by our model. Implications of the results, along with literature review is discussed.
