A majority of people are suffering from low back pain (LBP) that also limits function in daily life, alongside causing pain. Recently, patients are searching for alternative and complementary therapies to support their medical treatment. Acupuncture and needling techniques are the most commonly applied ones. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture on pain and functional management of adults with acute/ sub-acute LBP, compared with sham / placebo, medication or other interventions. Six randomised controlled trials (RCTs) including 593 participants were identified using a comprehensive search strategy on 10 databases. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the PEDro scale. The results of the meta-analysis concluded that acupuncture seems to be more effective compared to sham acupuncture on pain and function at the end of the treatment period, with a strong level of evidence (2 studies, pain on VAS; pooled MD, - 1.27; 95% CI: -1.93, -0.61; P = 0.0002, and 3 studies, function on RMDQ; pooled MD, -3.39; 95% CI: -5.70, -1.08; P = 0.004). In conclusion, this review suggests that acupuncture may have a role on treatment of acute / sub-acute LBP; however the effect size should be investigated with further high quality trials.
