Characterisation of river physical structure, assessment of river habitat quality and degradation has become an important element of hydromorphological assessment because of the recognition influence of these variables in biotic structure that led to the development of more comprehensive assessments of rivers, including river habitat structure within the quality assessment. Accordingly, numerous assessment methods have been developed worldwide. Raid development has explicitly been seen in Europe after the introduction of WFD to fulfil its requirements. Turkey, as a European Union candidate country, has started to implementation the WFD and some progress has been made in this regard. Turkey needs to develop a specific national hydromorphological assessment method that is compliant with WFD. Multi criteria decision making processes, which are Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), have been applied to find the most suitable hydromorphological assessment method for Turkey. To do this, 25 methods from non-European countries and 19 methods from European countries have been evaluated. As a result, the Slovenian (SHIM) method has been found to be the most suitable method from among the European methods considered, and the South African (IHI) method as the most suitable non-European method. Finally, some recommendations have been developed for Turkey's method by considering their strengths and limitations, Turkish catchment characteristics, and main hydromorphological pressures on rivers in Turkey. Recommendations are basically related to national river typology system, spatial scale of assessment, naturally dry rivers, hydrological regime alteration, remote sensing and GIS, and multi indices system.
