This dissertation seeks to analyse the impact of the international conjuncture on the collective strength and organization of Turkish labour movement. While most scholars sought to explain the factors behind the rise and decline of Turkish labour movement in the pre- and post-1980 era in terms of internal politics, I argue that the rise and decline of Turkish labour movement between 1960 and late 1980s has been an outcome of the interplay between 'the internal' and 'the international'. While the international politicoeconomic conjuncture between 1960 and 1980 has contributed to the rise of Turkish labour movement but also led to ideological divisions, the post-1980 conjuncture paved the way for the suppression of organized labour but also led to the centralization of it.
