Özet (Çeviri)

With the success of newly formed AKP as the leading political party in 2002 General Elections, Turkey embraced an intense neo-liberal economic model which priotirizes economic development and increased utilization of nature which led to rapid urbanization and excessive use of natural resources. Rapid urbanization occurs the most in coastal areas due to these regions' abundance of natural resources, eligible lands for various industrial activities and natural beauties suitable for touristic activities. Dense urbanization in coastal areas demands increased infrastructure by putting unbearable pressure on coastal ecosystems and results in biodiversity loss. This complex environmental configuration of coastal areas is the main inquiry of this study. Although Turkey has international and national legal framework to support nature conservation and biodiversity preservation, it is generally discussed in the academic circles, that AKP frequently fails to follow these regulations and pursue profitable businesses that might cause environmental degradation. It is discussed in this study that urbanization under AKP is unplanned, unorganized and unbalanced, and leads to biodiversity loss. AKP's environmental policies lead to biodiversity loss because of inconsistent environmental laws, frequently changed regulations, easily manipulated and corrupted environmental assessment reports, lack of collaboration among ministries, and lack of environmental consciousness. In addition, it is discussed that civil society and environmentalists becomes the control mechanism for natural conservation in the absence of government's supervision.
