Özet

u ÖZET Arthur efsaneleri yüzylardır defalarca yeniden yorumlanmış yeni şekiller kazanmıştır. Edebi eserlerin yazıldıklar çağın politik arenası, tarihi ve kültürel gelişimi göz önünde bulundurularak incelenmesi gerektiğinden, bu tez, Kral Arthur efsanelerinin Idylls of the King adlı eserde, Viktorya Çağı sosyo-kültürel değerleri ışığında nasıl yeniden şekil aldığım incelemektedir. Ayrıca, eserdeki krallık, otorite, kahramanlık, ve kadın kavranılan ve efsanelerin başlangıcından beri temelini oluşturan diğer sosyal kurumlar dört bölüm altında ele alınmıştır. Birinci bölümde Kraliçe Viktorya döneminde meydana gelen politik, kültürel, bilimsel ve dini gelişmelerin geleneksel kraliyet ve kilise otoritelerini toplum bazında nasıl tartışılır hale getirip, toplumu ne şekilde otoriteyi reddeder duruma getirdiği anlatılmaktadır. Bunun yanında Tennyson'un Kral Arthur efsanelerini yeniden yorumlayarak çağa uygun hale getirmiş ve toplumu içine düştüğü manevi otorite boşluğundan kurtarmayı amaç edinmiş olduğu anlatılmaktadır. Eserde manevi otrite boşluğunun ortaya çıkardığı olumsuz olaylar ile Kral Arthur' a ve kiliseye bağlı kalmış şövalyelerin kurtuluşa erdikleri karşılaştırmalı örneklerle incelenmiştir. ikinci bölüm, Tennyson'un geleneksel İngiliz Kahramanlığını unutmaya yüz tutmuş Viktorya toplumunu nasıl eleştirdiğini incelemektedir. Bu bölüm, eğer hatırlatılırsa, toplumun kahraman geçmişinin, Endüstri Devrimiyle meydana gelen çekingenliği ve korkalığı alt edeceğine ilişkin, Tennyson'un inancım ortaya koymaktadır.Ill Üçüncü bölümde, Viktorya Çağında kadın, aşk ve duygusallık kavramlarına getirilen yeni yorumlar incelemektedir. Tennyson'un kadın ve aşk kavramını nasıl birlikte ele almış olduğu ve kadını toplumun ve ailenin nasıl ayrılmaz bir parçası olarak gördüğü anlatılmaktadır. Tennyson'un ideal olan ve olmayan eşleri bir arada çizimesi, onun Viktorya toplumundaki aile içi sadakata verdiği önemi göstermektedir. Dördüncü bölüm, Viktorya Çağında meydana gelen bilimsel, teknolojik ve buna bağlı olarak meydana gelen yeni politik gelişmelerin sebep olduğu din yozlaşması ele alınmaktadır. Bu bölümde, Tennyson'un, kendi varlığım bile bilimsel gelişmeler ışığında kuşkuyla sorgulamaya başlayan Viktorya toplumunu, Arthur efsanelerinde kuşkuya düşen kahramanların kurtulma ümitlerinin kalmayıp nasıl yok olup gittiklerini göstererek, içine düştüğü dini kuşkularından kurtarmaya çalışması anlatılmaktadır.

IV ABSTRACT The Arthurian legend has been continually reinterpreted and reshaped throughout the centuries. As it is necessary to examine the literary works according to the political, historical, and cultural history of the period in which they were written, the thesis concentrates on Tennyson's Idylls of the King and examines it as a reinterpretation of the Arthurian legend and a reworking of the myth to reflect the Victorian ideals, culture, religion and social institutions. The thesis examines Tennyson's reinterpretation of the ideals and ideas related to authority, heroism, woman, and religion, which were the basis of the Arthurian legend from its very beginnings. The first chapter examines the new Victorian concept of authority. It illustrates how the Victorians became more and more disobedient to the authority each day. It illustrates that the Idylls of the King is an appeal to the Victorian nation to recognise the royal and the religious authorities. By the reinterpretation of the ideal medieval courtly characters it demonstrates that the possible way to salvation was pure obedience. The second chapter examines how Tennyson criticises the Victorians of becoming unheroic. It illustrates the belief that if the Victorians were reminded, their heroic past would urge them to overcome all the obstacles and the complacency of the day. It illustrates Tennyson's aim at re establishing the lost individuality in the Victorian era. It also illustrates how the Arthurian legend was drawn to suit the Victorian social values.The third chapter examines how the Victorian era became an era of new conceptions of women, love and sensuality. It examines how the sensuous female characters illustrate the new Victorian love which combined spirituality and sensuality with the modern Victorian spiritual and sensual experiences. It also examines Tennyson's depiction of ideal and non-ideal female characters, which aimed at developing the status of women by educating and rescuing them from the romantic images of woman. It presents how love was accepted as the spiritual authority within the self, which was believed to bring proportion and power of action. It presents Tennyson's concept of love, which was a great ethical force, that can protect men from lust. The fourth chapter illustrates how the rapid improvement in the technological and scientific areas brought new theological and philosophical theories, which opened the way for long lasting literary debates. It examines how the improvements led the society to question the validity of ecclesiastical teachings. It presents that the re-interpretation of the Arthurian legend had been a functional device for moral, religious and royal design of the Idylls of the King.
