Özet

Steampunk türü ilk olarak 1980'lerde Viktorya Dönemi'nde geçen alternatif tarih kurgularını tanımlamak için edebiyat alanında ortaya çıkmış, daha sonra birçok sanat alanında kendine yer edinmiştir. 2000'li yıllarda popülerliğini arttıran steampunk, artık sadece bir tür olarak değil, akım, moda, stil ve alt kültür olarak da tanımlanmaya başlanmıştır. Temelini Viktorya Dönemi ve Sanayi Devrimi nostaljisinden alan steampunk estetiği, ilkel teknolojiyle oluşturulmuş fütürist tasvirlerle karakterize edilmektedir. Steampunk estetiğinin temellerinin geçmişe dayanması, geçmiş zamanın teknolojisiyle ve o dönemde yaşamış olan insanlarının gözüyle bir alternatif tarih kurgusu sunması, bu türün retrofütürizm kavramıyla ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Konu hakkında yapılan literatür taramalarında, steampunk türü ve steampunk estetiğinin, geçmişten bugüne kadar geçirdiği değişimin, bu kavramlar hakkında tanımlama güçlüğü ve kavram karmaşası yarattığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışma, steampunk türü ve estetiğinin, retrofütürizm perspektifinden irdelenmesiyle kavramların anlaşılır kılınmasını amaçlamaktadır. Ayrıca, çalışmanın içeriğinde, steampunk kavramının çatısını oluşturan bilim kurgu türü hakkında da araştırmalara yer verilmektedir. Steampunk estetiği hakkındaki araştırmalar ve bu araştırmalar sonucunda yapılan çıkarımlar, türün estetiğini barındıran film, çizgi roman ve video oyunu gibi görsel içerikli yapıtların içerik analizi yöntemine dayalı olarak incelenmesiyle desteklenmektedir. Steampunk estetiğinden izler taşıyan günümüze yakın yapıtlar dışında, bu estetiğin oluşumuna öncülük etmiş olabilecek yapıtlar da incelemeye tabi tutulmuştur. Ayrıca, bu çalışmada, steampunk estetiği hakkında literatür taramalarından elde edilen bilgilerin, eser incelemelerinden elde edilen sonuçlarla karşılaştırılması yapılıp, steampunk estetiğinin geçmişten bugüne gelişimi ve değişimi ortaya konulmaktadır.

The steampunk genre, for the first time, appeared in the field of literature in order to define the alternative history that occured in 1980ies in the Victorian Era, and then gained foot for itself in many fields of art. Increasing its popylarity in the 2000s, steampunk was no more a genre, but it started to be defined as a trend, a fashion, a style and as a sub-culture. The steampunk aesthetics that was based on the nostalgia of Victorian Era and Industrial Revolution, is characterized with the futuristic descriptions formed by the primitive technologies. The fact that the steampunk took the basis of its aesthetics from the past, that it offers and alternative historical fiction by the past time technologies and from the eyes of the people who lived in that era, show that the genre is related with the concept of retrofuturism. Through the literature reivews done in the matter, it was detected that the steampunk genre and the steampunk aesthetics, and the change they observed from the past to today, create a definition difficulty and confusion of concepts. This work aims to make the concepts comprehendable, through the examination of the steampunk genre and aesthetics in terms of retrofuturism perspective. To this purpose, studies regarding the sci-fi genre that form the frame of the steampunk concept are also mentioned, within the scope of the work. The studies about the steampunk aesthetics and the conclusions to such studies are supported by the examination of the visual works such as films, comic books, and video games that contain the aesthetics of the genre. Other than the recent works that bear the treaces of the steampunk aesthetics, the works that pioneered the formation of this genre were also made subject to the examination. In this study, additionally, the information obtained through the literature reviews about the steampunk aesthetics were compated with the results obtained by the work reviews, thus the development and the change of the steampunk aesthetics from the past to today are produced.
