Özet (Çeviri)

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu recorded her travel to Europe and the Ottoman Empire from August 1716 to November 1718. She manages to develop a dialogic relationship with the Eastern other with her different attitude, and this interaction changes the hierarchy of 'the self' and 'the other' over time, resulting in changes in her identity. What underlies Montagu's identity change is a dynamic interrelation in which neither 'self' nor 'the other' are fixed; through interaction, both remain fluid. Montagu's fluidity allows her to construct a hybrid identity. An analysis of hybridity as a result of intense interaction with the other can provide a new insight into her travel account. The dialogic nature of Montagu's account in which the voice of the easterner is not muted and the interaction she initiates between the East and West subvert the orientalist stereotypes of the East. This interaction leads her to construct a hybrid identity. Her letters challenge orientalist distinctions between East and West, as well as the binary oppositions that underlie these distinctions. The Turkish Embassy Letters consist of fifty-eight letters. In this study, the ones in which Montagu maintains dialogue with the eastern other and includes other voices were selected and analysed. Using Bakhtinian terms of dialogism, polyphony and heteroglossia, Montagu's five letters are compared to other travellers' accounts. Besides specific letters, her travel account is analysed as a whole, and her changing identity is examined by focusing on the similarities, superiorities and differences she notices and highlights throughout her interaction with the east. In the first chapter, the Enlightenment era in which the letters were written, and the Tulip Age, during which Montagu travelled to the Ottoman Empire, will be briefly discussed. The chapter will then overview orientalism and end with the characteristics of the epistolary genre and Montagu's letter-writing. In the second chapter, Bakhtin's theory of dialogism as well as the concepts of polyphony and heteroglossia will be discussed. Later, the most dialogical parts, hamam and harem letters will be analysed using these Bakhtinian concepts. In the third chapter, Montagu's identity construction in its cultural, religious, national, scientific dimensions will be investigated and analysed in relation to the concept of hybridity.
