Özet (Çeviri)

The aviation industry is developing and changing. Safety, on the other hand, is a concept which is gaining importance and will always be an important part of the aviation industry. Since the establishment of the aviation, the concept of safety has expanded and evolved through research. Initial research focused on the mistakes caused by technology, while subsequent research showed that accidents and hazards are not just caused by machines. In the aviation industry, which is centred on human and technology, the perception of safety began to shift towards a more holistic approach. Therefore, construct of safety culture became prominent. The concept of safety culture encompasses an organisation from top to bottom. The organisational culture established by the employees of an organisation is also the determinant of the safety culture. In this context, this research examined the safety culture in an airline organisation. This qualitative case study evaluated the concept of safety culture by focusing on flight crews who are closest to operational hazards and mid-level managers. This study compared the perspectives management and frontline personnel based on James Reason's safety culture model. In this research a research tool that had never been used in the aviation industry was implemented. It proved to be useful for revealing the safety related narratives of flight crews and their perspectives on organisation. Interviews with mid-level managers allowed the researcher to understand and evaluate how the organisation structured and improved safety. This airline positively established the five sub-components of Reason's safety culture model. However, the result of the comparison showed that some issues that were not directly related to safety were ignored by top-level managers. This revealed that flight crews and management did not approach the concept of safety from the same angle. This thesis emphasized how important is the construct of safety culture for an airline.
