This thesis explores how transnational migrants living in the UK understand and experience migration, personal life and interpersonal relationships at a distance, and contributes to the growing body of work on personal life in non-Western and transnational migrant contexts. Recent studies overlook cultural elements of interpersonal relationships and limitedly investigate the complexity of personal life in non-Western cultures, and few scholarly works offer critical and inclusive approaches to personal lives in specific and historical locations. By exploring interpersonal relationships in the contexts of non-Western culture, transnationalism, migrant diasporic identity, religion and gender, this thesis introduces a new framework for understanding contemporary transnational migrant profiles and displays how their lives and relationships change through their migration process. Centralising the transnational migrants' perspectives, this research emphasises the personal life and intimate practices in couple life, family-kin relationships, and friendships based on cultural expectations, mobility experiences and social transitions. Specifically, this thesis illustrates how participants' everyday life activities have a transformative impact on their understanding and practices of intimacy. Transnationalism is a crucial element throughout this research, providing multi-layered opportunities to embody the matters of identity, gender, closeness and attachments. Employing qualitative methods on twenty-five participants, this thesis proposes alternative empirical ways of researching personal life in the context of transnationalism by considering how they negotiate, de-traditionalise and sustain interpersonal relationships. While their personal life highlights the intimate side of migration, they introduce alternative ways of conceptualising intimacy beyond the implications of the late modernity thesis and ethnocentrism.
