This dissertation analyzes structural features that enabled the Syrian Ba'th regime to sustain its authority and rule over Syria since 1963 as well as to play a vital role in regional politics today. A deeper understanding of the nature of the regime in terms of its meaning of nationhood, ethnic and religious social fabric, economic structure and political activism will be essential to answering the question about continuity or change. These questions will be answered within the framework of theoretical work on authoritarianism and transition models as well as a study of Syrian national history and civic society. Furthermore, the regional and international political positioning of the Syrian regime and its influence on domestic legitimacy will be assessed. This dissertation will present answers to the questions: how did the Syrian Ba'th regime maintained full control over the state, society and the military from 1963 until today
