This study investigates the effects of heritage language (HL) instruction on first language (L1) proficiency in speakers who live in the second language (L2)-dominant setting environment in the UK. Two groups of L1 Turkish and L2 English bilingual children (aged 9-12) originally came from mainland Turkey participated in the study. One group currently attended HL classes once a week, whereas the other group was not doing so. The sentence production task was conducted to two groups in terms of to see their production in a grammatical feature named evidentiality. Results from the task showed that the group that currently attended HL classes were less accurate than the non-attending group in indirect evidential conditions. A teacher questionnaire was also run to identify the teachers' views of HL education and the effect of instruction on the students L1 proficiency. The HL teachers pointed out that the lack of materials and low attendance to the courses make to see the effect of instruction difficult. Besides, student motivation for HL education is suggested to be increased by informing the parents about the advantage of being instructed in early ages. The study suggests that HL instruction as a factor that, all other things being equal, may help the students' development in L1 when the conditions are improved in the HL classes.
