Özet

The aim of this study was to investigate how EFL learning and its use affect and contribute to the identity construction of adult language learners and users in higher education, and how multiple identities that emerged through language learning differ from each other. To this end, semi-structured interviews were held with 13 adult learners of English as a foreign language. The rationale for the study is that for having a healthy psychological and psychosocial development, one should have a successful and healthy construction of image of self. Hence, it is of utmost importance to pay attention to the construction of identities and the circumstances surrounding and influencing the process to help individuals, in this research context, to help learners to have a healthy identity construction process. If the construction of identity does not happen in a healthy way, it leads to social isolation, mental health problems, self-seclusion, lack of self-confidence and self-esteem (Kramsch, 2009). These might as well cause an identity crisis, which is a psychological term initially coined by German psychologist Erik Erikson (1968; 1970) in the literature, for individuals who might end up being in a long time-spanned stage of questioning their own self. Therefore, it is crucial to recognise the significance of identity construction and its process that specifically occur through language learning, and considering that this field of study is limited, often neglected and under-researched, the study also aims to contribute to the literature and deal with the gap in the literature by investigating these issues.
