Özet
Bu tez, Howard Barker'ın (d. 1946 -) oyun yaratma zihniyetine ışık tutmayı amaçlamaktadır. Barker, 1980'lerde yeni bir tiyatro disiplini kuran, yazım, performans, olay örgüsü ve en önemlisi belirsizlik konusunda alışılmışın dışında bir yaklaşım sergileyen ünlü bir oyun yazarıdır. Otoriter edebi geleneklere direnmek amacıyla Barker tarafından yaratılan ve Felaket Tiyatrosu biçiminde Türkçe'ye çevrilen“Theatre of Catastrophe”ile oyun yazarı döneminin tiyatro geleneklerine yönelik tüm eleştirilerini bir araya getirmiş ve bu tiyatro nihayetinde onun en tanınmış mirası haline gelmiştir. Barker'ın oyunlarını ve zihniyetini, onun zihniyetini daha önce hiç bilmeden ilk kez deneyimlemek, Barker'ın izlediği genel yaklaşımın daha önce de belirtildiği gibi alışılmışın dışında olması nedeniyle kafa karışıklığına yol açabilir. Bu nedenle, Barker'ın oyunlarını daha iyi anlayabilmek için, bu tez Barker'ın erken dönem deneyimlerine ve tiyatro algısına ışık tutmaya çalışacaktır çünkü daha sonra benimsediği yaklaşım, 1970'lerden 1980'lere uzanan on yıllık dönemden oldukça etkilenmiştir. Barker'ın izlediği genel yaklaşım, edebi alanda norm olarak kabul edilene meydan okumak olduğundan, Michel Foucault'nun iktidar-bilgi ilişkilerinden yararlanmak, Barker'ın zihin dunyasının ve tiyatroyu kontrol edenlere karşı verdiği mücadelenin çok daha net bir şekilde anlaşılmasına yardımcı olacaktır. Barker'ın Michel Foucault'dan etkilenip etkilenmediği bilinmese de oyun yazarının edebi/politik kurumlar ile yazarlar arasındaki iliskileri kuramsallaştırması, Foucault'nun kuramsallaştırmasına benzemektedir. Barker'ın Felaket Tiyatrosu'nu, İngiliz tiyatrosunun teatral performanslarını düzenleyen zamanının iktidar-bilgi ilişkilerini eleştirmek ve bunlara direnmek için yarattığı söylenebilir. Net bir anlayışa ulaşıldıktan sonra, bu çalışma Howard Barker'ın The Castle (1985) ve The Europeans (1987) oyunlarını ve bu oyunların otoriter tiyatro geleneklerine nasıl karşı çıktıklarını inceleyecektir.

This thesis aims at putting a spotlight on Howard Barker's (born in 1946 - ) mindset of crafting plays. Barker is a playwright who established a new discipline of theatre in the 1980s which was famous for its unorthodox approach in writing, performance, plotting, and most importantly ambiguity. Theatre of Catastrophe was created by Barker in order to resist the authoritarian literary conventions, combining all of Barker's criticism regarding the theatrical conventions of his time, ultimately becoming his most recognisable legacy. Experiencing Barker's plays for the first time while having no former understanding of his mentality might result in confusion as the general approach that Barker follows is, as mentioned earlier, an unorthodox one. Thus, in order to reach a level of appreciation of his plays, this thesis will attempt to shed light on Barker's early experience and perception of theatre as the approach he adopted later was highly influenced by that decade which spanned from 1970s to the 1980s. Since the general approach that Barker followed was that of defying what was considered as the norm in the literary field, utilising Michel Foucault's power - knowledge relations will assist in providing a much clearer understanding of Barker's mindset and his struggle against those who controlled theatre. Even though it is not known whether Barker was influenced by Michel Foucault or not, his theorisation of the relationship between literary/political institutions and authors resembles that of Michel Foucault's theorisation. It can be said that Barker created the Theatre of Catastrophe to criticise and resist the power - knowledge relations of his time that regulated the theatrical performances of the English theatre. Once a clear understanding is achieved, this study will attempt to investigate Howard Barker's The Castle (1985) and The Europeans (1987) and how they counter the authoritarian theatrical conventions.
