Introduction: The literature shows that there are differences between the experienced and novice nurses' decision-making process such as the amount of information they seek before making a clinical judgment. However, there is no literature that has investigated the Orthoptic Allied Health Professionals'(AHP) clinical reasoning process. Furthermore, there is evidence that some personality traits are linked to certain types of information-seeking behavior, which is the main element of the clinical decision-making process. Objective: This study aims to investigate if there were differences between the Orthoptic AHPs with different levels of experience in the amount of information they request before making a clinical decision. In addition, this study examines whether different personality traits were linked to seeking different amounts of information in order to make a clinical judgment. Method: 159 Orthoptic AHPs filled out an online survey that consisted of a demographic form, The Big Five Personality Test and 10 hypothetical clinical scenarios that were created by an expert Orthoptist. Participants' decision-making process was measured with the level of information they required to make a decision about the given hypothetical scenarios and what decision they concluded on –treat the patient or send home-. Results: There were not any statistically significant differences between the experience groups in the level of information they requested to make a decision or the decision outcome. However, younger participants sought for significantly more information than the older participants in two scenarios. The personality traits did not seem to affect the participants' decision-making process. Findings, however, showed that the level of information taken by participants who made the 'treat' decision was significantly greater than the level of information taken by participants who made the 'send home' decision in all of the 10 scenarios. Discussion: Different results from the past studies may be explained by the study limitations. However, literature was mainly focused on nurses who have different job descriptions than AHPs. This study warrants the investigation of more domains of the decisionmaking process in Allied Health Professionals with future studies. It will be important to take this study forward with an improved methodology.
