The purpose of this research is to examine the teachers' perspective of critical thinking (CT), and the effectiveness of applied critical thinking skills in terms of teaching and assessment methods by English and Science teachers in secondary schools in UK. In order to successfully investigate this topic, a mixed method embedded design is chosen. The data collection instruments used with the ten participants interview and questionnaire, which were applied at the same time. To analyse the data, thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used in the embedded design. The study is conducted with the aim of seeking appropriate ways to develop CT in various teaching and assessment methods; although no single method has emerged as the best, some do seem to be effective when properly implemented. This paper focuses on two aspects. The first is the perspective of teachers regarding CT. Their awareness of CT is significant; however, they do not have enough knowledge about applying CT skills in the classroom. The other aspect this research investigates is applied CT skills in terms of teaching and assessment strategies which are useful in promoting CT and applicable to English and Science classrooms; that is, explicit instruction, open-ended questioning for both teaching and assessments methods, as well as active, group and cooperative learning strategies by using pedagogic approaches. Meanwhile, the common positive features of effective CT instruction are discussed, in order to illuminate instructional strategies for CT at a macro level. Lastly, the barriers to applying CT skills to improve students' CT skills in education are explored, such as the curriculum, national exams and students' personalities. TABLE OF C
