Özet (Çeviri)
Fantasy literature and science fiction in the American literature, similar to its counterparts in Europe I heavily depended on establishment of cultural binaries. Near East1 has been a recurring image of the cultural contestant of the United States along with the Western world in virtually every genre of literature for the last two hundred years. In this thesis, I will be examining three literary pieces from fantasy literature and science fiction written by American authors which belong to different decades. The first piece is a novella by H.P. Lovecraft titled The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath in which the Orient is presented in a dream and portrayed as the setting for the adventures of the protagonist. In the second piece I will analyze a classic of the science fiction genre Dune by Frank Herbert, in which Orient is seen and treated as a resource in the empire which supports a colonial ideology. The last piece I will be working on is the first novel of Saladin Ahmed titled Throne of the Crescent Moon which is a fantasy story set in a medieval city in the Orient. By setting the story in the Orient, Ahmed challenges the stereotypical portrayal of the Near East which prevailed in the genre of fantasy literature since the Orient began to be viewed as the cultural contestant of the West. Through analyzing the recurring themes of the orientalism come into surface in the first two pieces of this research and how they are deconstructed in Throne of the Crescent Moon, I will be arguing that Saladin Ahmed is challenging the orientalism in fantasy literature.
