Children's understanding of intensive quantities of materials is believed to be very poor. However, recent studies have shown that by using different methods children's performance in reasoning intensive properties could be enhanced. Therefore, this study examines whether using an analogous task and giving causal information can improve children's understanding of intensity/concentration of paint powder – water mixtures. We designed two parallel tasks, which were judging intensity of paint powder/ water mixture and probability of picking a green winner marble from a set of winner and loser marbles. As previously reported by several studies, reasoning about intensive quantities improved by aged. Results showed that first grade children could not transfer their newly acquired information and the ability of reasoning about probability to mixing task. However, second graders' performance in mixing task was likely to be improved through use of an analogous task and causal information. Overall, our findings suggest that children's intensity judgments could be enhanced via analogy by reason and causal information.
