Özet

This project investigates the use of aluminium rotors instead of cast iron rotors with the objective of reducing the rotor weight. This is a common goal in -growing automotive industry in order to reduce vehicle weights and hence their emissions. Along the aforementioned investigation, squeal in both brake rotors was monitored - the absence of squeal in the aluminium rotor was discovered and this illuminated an area of research that became integral to this project. PEO (Plasma E ng is complimentary to the Aluminium rotor, as otherwise the Aluminium cannot withstand the temperatures generated during braking. This is due t bility to reduce the amount of heat transfer towards the aluminium core (1). This work presents two hypotheses that explain the absence of squeal in the Aluminium rotor. The main suspected reason is the high damping capacity of Aluminium relative to Cast Iron, since brake squeal occurs as a result of vibrations on the brake rotor. Alternatively, the surface stiffness of the PEO coating could be the reason, as the typical surface hardness of Alumina PEO coating is between 1500 and 2000 HV (2), which is approximately 8 times greater than that of cast iron. This work concludes that more experimentation is needed to eliminate one of these hypotheses. Experiments which closely examine the surface topography are particularly important and equipment such as Scanning Electron Microscope would be needed. Details found in the body of this lay the groundwork needed to facilitate this future work.
