Abstract: Sleep is a fundamental necessity, and an individual's well-being can be defined as a state of complete physical, psychological, and social health. Sleep directly influences an individual's physical, psychological, and social well-being. Consequently, sleep disorders inevitably affect various aspects of individuals' daily lives. In pregnant women, sleep disorders can significantly impact both the mother and the baby for various reasons. Maternal well-being during pregnancy is of paramount importance, as negative experiences during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Yoga nidra has demonstrated efficacy in addressing sleep and stress disorders in various populations. This suggests that it may have a positive impact on sleep disorders, anxiety, and stress in pregnant women. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of yoga nidra application on sleep disorders, depression, and anxiety in pregnant women. Materials and Methods: A total of 110 pregnant women without comorbidities in the 2nd trimester and early 3rd trimester (20-34 weeks of gestation) who applied to the antenatal clinic were included in the study. In the initial visit, a questionnaire including sociodemographic data, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was completed. Subsequently, 110 pregnant women were recommended to practice yoga nidra, and training was provided. Those who chose to continue the practice recorded their sessions with the help of audio recordings. After one month, based on the self-reports of the pregnant women, 45 were identified as practitioners of yoga nidra, while 65 did not continue the practice. PSQI and HADS scales were administered again to all participants. Pregnant women were evaluated in two groups based on their sleep quality, anxiety, and depression scores. Results: A total of 110 pregnant women were included in the study. At the end of the intervention, it was observed that 45 individuals (40.91%) practiced yoga, while 65 individuals (59.09%) did not. When comparing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) Depression and Anxiety Scores based on yoga practice status at the 1st measurement, it was found that the PSQI, HADS Depression, and HADS Anxiety Scores were statistically significantly lower in those not practicing yoga (p < 0.001; p = 0.004; p < 0.001). When comparing the scores at the 2nd measurement based on yoga practice status, it was found that PSQI and HADS Anxiety Scores were statistically significantly lower in the yoga practicing group (p = 0.023; p = 0.013). Within the yoga practicing group, when examining the scores between measurements for PSQI, HADS Depression, and HADS Anxiety, it was observed that all scale scores significantly decreased (all p < 0.001). In the non-yoga practicing group, when examining the scores between measurements for PSQI, HADS Depression, and HADS Anxiety, it was found that all scale scores significantly increased (p = 0.006; p = 0.002; p < 0.001). When evaluating the differences between measurements in the groups for PSQI, HADS Depression, and HADS Anxiety Scores, a decrease was observed in the yoga practicing group, while an increase was observed in the non-yoga practicing group. These results showed statistically significant differences for all scale scores (all p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study identifies positive effects of yoga nidra on sleep disorders, anxiety, and stress in pregnant women. Following yoga nidra practice, an increase in sleep quality measured by the PSQI index and positive changes in HADS anxiety and depression scores were observed in pregnant women. The ease of implementation and proven effectiveness in various groups support the use of yoga nidra in pregnant women. However, unfortunately, there is a lack of sufficient research on yoga nidra applications specifically for pregnant women in the literature. We believe that conducting more studies in this regard would be beneficial for the effective and non-pharmacological treatment of sleep disorders in pregnant women.
