SUMMARY Due to the increasing importance of teams within the organizations during the recent years, this study focuses on teams and the factors of effectiveness. The study starts by reviewing the recent research on teams especially emphasizing the relationship between team composition and effectiveness of teams. The review starts with the definition of the concept of the 'team', prior to highlighting the main differences between 'a group and a team'. This distinction is made for this study, while throughout the history the two terms have been used interchangeably by many researchers. The review also includes the historical developments of teams in the industry and gives an overall concept about the factors that influence the effectiveness of the teams at work. These factors include team building stages, team size, team composition, team cohesiveness and leadership provided in the teams. Among these factors, the study mainly focuses on the relationship between team composition and effectiveness, claiming heterogeneity of the team members leading to better performance. Based on the findings in the literature that support the relationship between heterogeneity and team effectiveness, this study focuses on team composition and effectiveness.Team composition, which is the independent variable of this study, refers to the heterogeneity or homogeneity of the teams depending on die demographic characteristics of the team members. Team effectiveness, which is the dependent variable, is defined in terms of four dimensions: creativity, time required for reaching a decision, quality of decision and job satisfaction of team members in this study: The study is experimental in design and the experiment was conducted in a factory site of a multinational organization, which is manufacturing fast-moving consumer goods specialized in cleaning agents. The unit of analysis is teams. Twelve teams were formed for the study. The individuals working in the factory are used to form teams with either heterogeneous or homogeneous characteristics. Although, the hypotheses claimed are not supported at the end of the study, the findings revealed that heterogeneous teams were slightly more creative and took better quality decisions, while spending more time in reaching a decision as hypothesized. On the other hand, opposed to the hypotheses, although the difference is not significant, the members of homogeneous teams are found to be slightly more satisfied with the job performed, whereas members of heterogeneous teams are slightly more satisfied with their teammates.
