Özet (Çeviri)

As a genre which reflects cultural anxieties and allows people to engage with terrifying scenarios as a form of catharsis, horror enforces certain dichotomies regarding traditional conceptions of humanity and corruption. Within this context, gender and sexuality occupy a complex place in American horror fiction, reflecting the shifting perceptions of normality in the cultural landscape of the United States. The virtuous protagonists who symbolize the status quo that must be protected conform to societal bias regarding gender roles, acceptable embodiment, and sexual behavior, while their foil, the Monster, is presented as a figure of physical and spiritual corruption who lives at the border of normality, drawing the limits of conventional embodiment and behavior by its transgression of norms. As such, certain monstrous figures manifest this corruption through their disregard of gendered conventions and acceptable forms of sexuality. Their particular design of body horror reflects society's ideals regarding embodiment and gender presentation while their immoral behavior breaches the restrictions of gender roles. The distaste for these transgressions reflect society's prejudice towards gender nonconformity and queerness, and these depictions further demonize nontraditional conceptions of gender and sexuality in return. From the coagulation of these patterns emerges the desire for deconstruction, resulting in transformative works that actively engage in the reclamation of monstrosity. Amongst such horror fiction works, thematized horror anthologies emerge as a particularly versatile vehicle for transgressive depictions, collecting and highlighting short stories in which monstrous characters take center stage as protagonists, utilizing moral and physical abjection to reconstruct their identities, celebrating the disruption of idealized humanity and embracing the vilified otherness of the Monster. Within this context, this dissertation will examine the evolution of such anthologies through the course of American horror fiction history and argue that the evolution of the ostracized Monster parallels the evolution of real life perceptions of transgressive identities and embodiment. The dissertation will further argue that these progressive stories bring a fresh perspective to the assumed universality of horror, allow the genre to achieve new levels of transgression, create new challenges to conformity, and push the boundaries of convention.
