ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to investigate the colour preferences of 36-60 months old pre-school children for their play areas in their schools. The research was carried out in 13 pre-school institutions in Eskişehir and 302 children (139- boys and 163 girls) acted as subjects. The subjects fell into the following age groups: 32-42 months, 69 children (39 girls and 30 boys), 43-48 months, 66 children (30 girls and 36 boys), 49-54 months, 87 children (34 girls and 53 boys), 55-60 months, 80 children (36 girls and 44 boys). Data is collected through role-play by using a story specifically written for the purpose by the author. Data were analysed by means of comparing percents and by means of Single and Double Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. The results may be summarized as below: - Wall colours of the different schools where subjects attend varied. This might be due to lack of standards in terms of decorating the pre-school interiors.-It was observed that children preferred a colour other than the colour of their play-rooms at their own schotils. This indicates that children's preferences do not match with present application. - No differences among subjects in terms of age or sex was observed in the task set forth. This might be an indication that at this age children tend to behave similarly when asked to choose colours they like and that colour preference at this age has not established yet. -It was observed that children's colour preferences indicated a specific colour. This indicates that wall decoration is an important issue for the children of this age group. The colour most preferred by the children turned out to be a hue of the colour of fashion at the time. This might be an indication that ^ven though children can indicate a preference in colour at their own will, they may be influenced by certain social factors like fashion. This, however is open to further discussion.
