GO ise, modifiye Hummers metodu kullanılarak sentezlenmiştir.
In the 21st century, energy storage, energy production, and global warming are paramount concerns for all countries worldwide. Global population growth, accelerated economic development, increasing energy demand, and climate change necessitate planning for a future powered by renewable energy sources to mitigate environmental impacts and sustain global ecosystems. To meet energy demands while reducing reliance on fossil fuels, renewable energies (such as tidal, solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal energy, and biomass, etc.) need to be produced and stored in cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient devices. With the extensive exploration of green and sustainable energy sources, there has been a growing need for innovative development of electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies to handle the electricity generated from these intermittent sources. Among the various electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered some of the most reliable, efficient, and practical devices. They are widely used in applications such as electric vehicles, portable electronics, aerospace, medical instruments, stationary power plants and other fields. This is due to their high energy and power densities, relatively long cycle life, portability, and safety advantages. Along with the updates in consumer electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops), the booming of electric/hybrid vehicles, and the growth of renewable energy stations, there is a demand for next-generation LIBs with high specific energy (energy per unit mass) and superior energy density (energy per unit volume) with long cyclability to meet their continuous energy demand/storage needs. To further increase energy density, enhance the portability of electronic devices and extend the mileage of electric vehicles on a single charge, developing LIBs has been identified as an effective approach. LIBs consist of a cathode (positive electrode), an anode (negative electrode), electrolyte, and a separator. During charging and discharging, the reversible intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions (Li+) predominantly occur at the anode of the LIB cell. Therefore, advanced anode materials with high capacity are crucial to meet the ever-growing requirements for high performance LIBs and play a critical role in the energy storage process. Currently, conventional intercalation-type graphite is widely used as an anode material in commercial LIBs due to its high reversibility and good cycle stability. However, graphite has a relatively low theoretical capacity (372 mAh g−1), and poor rate performances, making it unsuitable for applications with high energy demand and high current density. Other commercial anode materials, such as lithium titanate, also have drawbacks including low specific capacity (175 mAh g−1), high Li+ insertion potential, and low electrical conductivity, that limit their use in high-energy applications. Thus, it is necessary to exploit high energy storage capacity materials to further enhance the performance of LIBs while ensuring they are cost-effective, abundant in nature, environmentally friendly, and safe to operate. These attributes will promote the extensive deployment of LIBs in various applications, thereby enhancing the sustainability of energy storage systems Silicon (Si) and silicon-based oxide materials (SiO, SiO2, SiOx, and SiOC) are among of the most promising candidates for next generation high-energy density LIBs due to their higher theoretical capacities, abundant reserves and environmental friendliness. Si has been extensively investigated as a promising alloy-type anode material for commercial anodes because of its ultrahigh theoretical capacity (4200 mAh g−1 for Li22Si5 phase) and relatively low delithiation voltages (0.2–0.3 V vs. Li/Li+). However, the significant volume fluctuation of Si during Li+ insertion/extraction, (up to 400%, Li22Si5) induces mechanical failure, such as pulverization and cracking, drastically reducing its cycling stability. Additionally, Si anodes suffer from low electrical conductivity, and low lithium-ion diffusion kinetics, limiting their performance and hampering their commercial application. Furthermore, the production of Si involves a large environmental footprint including high temperatures (1900 °C), significant energy input (15 MWh T−1 Si), and high CO2 emissions (4.7 kg CO2 kg−1 Si). In parallel, silica (SiO2) offers several advantages, including as smaller expansion volume (100%), lower operation potential (<0.5 V vs. Li/Li+), high lithium-ion storage capacity (1965 mAh g-1), and cost-effective preparation compared to Si. Due to these advantages, SiO2 has recently attracted significant interest and has been positioned as an alternative anode material to Si. Furthermore, the lithiation process of SiO2 produces irreversible inert phases such as lithium oxide (Li2O) and lithium silicates (Li2Si2O5, Li4SiO4, Li2SiO3), which act as natural volume buffers. These phases promote stable KEY‐film growth, thereby significantly enhancing cycling stability. Electroactive Si domains are produced and dispersed in a matrix of these electrochemically inactive species during the cycling. The in-situ produced Si further reacts reversibly with Li+, contributing to its reversible storage capacity. Nevertheless, the extreme volume change of SiO2 during lithiation/delithiation is inevitable even if it is not as large as that of Si and still induces several adverse effects: i) repeated destruction and formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (KEY) leading to continuous consumption of the electrolyte and rapid capacity degradation; ii) significant polarization of the electrode material due to the formation of an unstable KEY; iii) alteration of electrical contact between electrode materials due to fluctuations in contact areas caused by the huge volume changes; iv) gradual pulverization of the electrode structure, and v) delamination from current collectors. Bulk crystalline SiO2, characterized by its strong Si-O bonds, exhibits low intrinsic electrical/ionic conductivity, making it a highly stable alloy-type anode material. However, its theoretical capacity remains unrealized in practical applications. Conversely, the poor intrinsic conductivity hampers the kinetics of Li-O and Li-Si during charge/discharge cycles resulting in a large initial irreversible capacity and low initial Coulombic efficiency, which significantly limits its rate capability. Consequently, extensive research efforts in recent years have focused on enhancing the electrochemical activity of SiO2 as an efficient anode material in LIBs. Ongoing research is addressing the aforementioned challenges through several strategies. One effective approach involves synthesizing SiO2 anodes with various nanostructures, such as nanotubes, nanospheres, nanorods, nanowires, nanocubes, and nanofilms, to enhance the Li+ storage performance of SiO2 anode materials. Nanostructured electrode materials reduce the ion and electron transfer pathways, buffer mechanical stress, and provide a large surface area for interactions between the electrode and electrolyte. Another effective strategy is the incorporation of electrically conductive carbonaceous materials, including porous carbon, carbon nanotubes (CNT), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), carbon nanospheres, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and reduced graphene oxides (rGO). These materials address the poor electrical conductivity of SiO2 anodes by enhancing electron transport, mitigating volume fluctuations during (de)lithiation, and facilitating electrolyte wetting. Additionally, they help prevent lithium dendrite formation during the (de)lithiation processes. In this dissertation, three different nanomaterial composites (SiO2@C, SiO2@CNT, and SiO2@rGO) were prepared to improve the performance of SiO2 as anode material for high-performance LIBs. Previous studies have suggested that compared with crystalline SiO2, amorphous SiO2 exhibits a lower activation energy barrier and less structure strain during the phase transitions of electrochemical lithiation-delithiation. Therefore, amorphous silica was used in this thesis. The high lithium storage capacity of SiO2 combined with the advantages of carbonaceous materials such as long cycle life, high conductivity and the ability to effectively relieve mechanical stress during cycles. This integration enhances the electrochemical performances of these composite-based anodes for LIBs. The carbon-coated SiO2 (SiO2@C) nanocomposite was synthesized using the sol-gel method with resorcinol-formaldehyde precursors. CNT-supported SiO2 (SiO2@CNT) nanocomposites were obtained via the in-situ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method of CNTs on SiO2, where the SiO2 was encapsulated within the CNT network. GO was synthesized using the modified Hummers' method. Subsequently, a three-dimensional foam-like composite of rGO supported SiO2 (SiO2@rGO) nanocomposites was fabricated using GO, SiO2 nanoparticles, and L-ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. The synthesized anode active nanomaterials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. These characterization techniques were employed to investigate the structural and morphological properties of the materials, including their crystal structures, chemical bonding, thermal stability, and morphological features. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of the electrodes designed in CR2032-type half-cells was evaluated. Electrochemical properties such as charge/discharge performance, specific capacity, and capacity retention were examined. The electrochemical behaviors of the electrodes were extensively analyzed using techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The continuous accumulation/cracking of passivation layers on alloy-type negative electrodes can form a kinetic diffusion barrier within the cell, potentially impeding electron transport and resulting in the loss of active lithium. As part of the thesis objectives, a controlled pre-lithiation process was implemented on the electrodes prior to charge/discharge cycles to enhance their electrochemical performance. Electrochemical pre-lithiation was employed to activate SiO2@C, SiO2@CNT, and SiO2@rGO electrodes. The activated Si species generated from redox reactions during pre-lithiation contributed to increased capacity and cycle stability in the batteries. It has been demonstrated that pristine SiO2 exhibited the lowest capacity compared to the other electrodes. However, pre-lithiated SiO2@C, SiO2@CNT, and SiO2@rGO composite electrodes showed significant improvements in their Coulombic efficiencies. In conclusion, these pre-lithiated electrodes demonstrated excellent cycle stability over 100 cycles at the current density of 0.1 A g-1, exhibiting superior electrochemical performance. SiO2@C, SiO2@CNT, and SiO2@rGO electrodes exhibited specific capacities of 511, 558, and 585 mAh g-1, respectively, with capacity retentions of 73%, 85%, and 73% after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1 current density. No significant differences were observed in the structural stability and capacities of SiO2@C, SiO2@CNT, and SiO2@rGO electrodes. The pre-lithiated SiO2@rGO electrode exhibited the highest specific capacity after 100 cycles, while the SiO2@CNT electrode showed the highest capacity retention. The use of carbonaceous materials, which offer high electrical conductivity and mechanical strength, combined with a pre-lithiation process has significantly improved the performance of SiO2@C, SiO2@CNT, and SiO2@rGO electrodes by compensating for irreversible lithium losses. Carbonaceous materials such as carbon, CNT, and rGO have promoted stable cycling behavior and improved the rate performance of SiO2 anodes. This dissertation aims to promote the broader utilization of SiO2-based materials in LIB technologies and contribute to the development of future high-capacity and long-life battery systems. The obtained results demonstrate the significant potential of SiO2/carbon-based nanocomposites in the field of energy storage. Advancements in next-generation anode materials will pave the way for sustainable and high-performance battery applications, offering higher energy density and improved cycling stability.
