Özet

Buku teks yang berguna dan berkesan merupakan elemen yang penting dalam mewujudkan persekitaran pelajaran yang berjaya. Kajian ini menilai bahan bacaan yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa universiti di Iraq hasil tulisan Alexander (1970), dalam menentukan kesesuaian dan keberkesanannya bagi pengajaran ilmu berkenaan bacaan kepada pelajar EFL di seluruh negara. Sampel kajian ini termasuklah pelajar dan guru daripada tiga universiti di Baghdad. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah gabungan penerokaan berurutan. Hal ini termasuklah senarai semakan sebagai alat utama yang disuai guna daripada Miekley (2005), direka khas bagi tujuan menilai buku teks bacaan Bahasa Inggeris. Temu bual berstruktur digunakan sebagai alat sekunder, yang direka bentuk oleh penyelidik untuk mengumpul pendapat umum daripada pengguna buku teks (pelajar dan guru) berkenaan aspek positif dan negatif dalam penggunaan buku teks di universiti di Iraq. Kemudian data daripada senarai semak dianalisis dengan menggunakan program SPSS. Hasil analisis membuktikan bahawa buku teks tidak cukup berkesan dan sesuai untuk digunakan sebagai bahan bacaan di universiti, dari sudut pandang para pelajar dan guru. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa kedua-dua sampel kajian tidak berpuas hati dengan ciri-ciri buku teks termasuklah reka bentuk latihan serta ketidakcukupan dan ketidaksesuaian buku teks, dan petikan yang digunakan sangat ketinggalan zaman. Hal ini menunjukkan bahawa buku teks tidak sesuai digunakan untuk mengajar mahasiswa berkenaan bacaan, yang menuntut pembuat keputusan dalam kementerian pengajian tinggi di Iraq supaya mempertimbangkan semula penggunaan buku teks.

Having a useful and effective textbook is a crucial element in the way of a successful educational environment. This study evaluated the reading materials used for the undergraduate students in Iraqi universities written by Alexander (1970) to determine whether it is suitable and effective to be used in teaching reading for EFL students nationwide. The sample of the research included students and teachers from three Universities in Baghdad. The method used in this study was an exploratory sequential mixed Method. It includes a checklist as a primary tool adapted from Miekley (2005) which is specially designed for the purpose of evaluating English language reading textbooks. The other tool is a structured interview that is used as a secondary tool designed by the researcher to gather the general opinions from the textbook users (students and teachers) about the positive and negative aspects of using the textbook in Iraqi universities. Then the data from the checklist were analysed using the (SPSS) program. The results of the analysis proved that the textbook is not suitable and effective enough to be used as the reading material in universities from the point of view of students and teachers. The results reflected that both samples are not pleased with many of the textbook's characteristics including the design of the exercises and how they are insufficient and unfitting, and how outdated the passages are. This indicates that the textbook is not suitable to be used in teaching reading for undergraduate students which calls for the decision makers in the Iraqi ministry of higher education to reconsider using this textbook.
