This thesis investigates studies conducted on cooling systems to reduce energy consumption due to the increasing world population and the effects of climate change. In this era of global warming and increasing environmental threats, developing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating and cooling systems has become a critical necessity. One of the most significant issues that reduce the efficiency of air-source heat pumps is the formation of frost on the evaporator surface. This frost slows down heat transfer, increasing energy consumption and reducing system performance. The study has conducted a detailed examination of various defrost methods commonly used in the literature. Due to the inability of traditional methods to provide sufficient improvement in energy consumption and efficiency, the need for an alternative defrost method has arisen. For this purpose, a new system has been designed to remove frost formed on the evaporator surface using microwave radiation, and experimental analyses have been carried out on this system. Within the scope of experimental studies, a combination of microwaves and water spraying has been used to increase the melting rate of the ice formed on the evaporator surface. The effect of relative humidity on frosting has been investigated. By comparing microwave-assisted experiments, the energy consumption and defrost times of the system have been compared. In the experiment conducted at 600 Watts, it was observed that the system remained stable for a long time, the ice partially melted, and complete melting did not occur. When comparing the experiment conducted at 800 Watts with the experiment conducted at 600 Watts, it was observed that the frosting on the evaporator surface increased by 228% and the frosting on the compressor surface increased by 3%, while the melting time was reduced from 900 seconds to 360 seconds, resulting in a 150% faster melting and uninterrupted heating. The experimental studies conducted have shown that the defrost process with microwave radiation can be applied without stopping the system and increases efficiency by reducing energy consumption. The microwave-assisted defrost method has been shown to be faster and more energy-efficient compared to traditional methods. This method has significant potential in household refrigerator evaporators by reducing the defrosting time and energy consumption. The findings reveal the potential of this method for use in air-source heat pumps and provide an innovative solution for designing highly energy-efficient systems. The microwave-assisted defrost method not only provides energy savings but also enables the continuous operation of the system. This has the potential to significantly improve the performance of air-source heat pumps, especially those operating in cold climates.
