Defining inadequacy can be complex due to its subjective nature and the fact that it is a fluid concept that is shaped by social and relational contexts. It can manifest in various ways. This study aims to examine the relationship between feelings of inadequacy and modern power dynamics through the lens of Narrative Therapy. By exploring the personal stories of individuals who struggle with feelings of inadequacy I hope to understand how they relate to modern power dynamics, and I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how these feelings can be addressed and resolved. A sample of 16 participants was recruited, and data were collected through interviews. Participants highlighted the societal expectations and pressures surrounding adequacy, including gender-specific roles, academic achievements, financial stability, and conforming to beauty standards. The pursuit of competence and excellence was found to intertwine with the perception of adequacy, leading to feelings of inadequacy when individuals fell short of unattainable standards. Comparison to others, lack of appreciation, and the influence of social media and advertisements were identified as significant factors contributing to feelings of inadequacy. These findings emphasize the need for a more nuanced understanding of adequacy and the detrimental effects of societal pressures on individuals' self-perception.
