This study investigated the effects of different doses of boric acid added to the drinking water of rats on body weight, antioxidant metabolism in serum and blood parameters. A total of 24 female rats (Wistar albino) aged 21 days were used in the study. The study was organized in three different groups, each consisting of 8 animals: Control, B-100 and B-200 groups. Boric acid was added to the drinking water of animals in the control group at a dose of 0 mg/L, boric acid was added to the drinking water of animals in the B-100 group at a dose of 100 mg/L and boric acid was added to the drinking water of animals in the B-200 group at a dose of 200 mg/L. The study lasted 42 days, 7 days of acclimatization and 35 days of trial. At the end of the study, animals were sedated under anesthesia and blood samples were taken. It was determined that boric acid had no effect on body weight and weight gain (P>0.05). In the study, it was found that total protein, creatine, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Ca, Mg and P levels were similar in the serum of Control, B-100 and B-200 groups (P>0.05), while glucose level increased statistically in the B-200 group (354.75 mg/dl), and albumin level increased statistically in the B-100 group (3.23 g/dl) (P<0.05). Serum triglyceride level was found to decrease statistically in the B-100 (56.00 mg/dl) and B-200 (59.45 mg/dl) groups compared to the Control (90.05 mg/dl) group (P<0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of antioxidant parameters such as catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (P>0.05). As a result, it can be stated that boric acid added to the drinking water of rats at the specified doses has no negative effect on the investigated parameters.
