Özet
145 ÖZET Bu çalışmanın amacı içerik Ağırlıklı Yabancı Dil Öğretimi (İAYDÖ) modellerinden biri olan SCI'nin özellikle Türkiye gibi ingilizcenin ilk ve orta öğretimde derinlemesine öğretilip kullanılmadığı ülkelerde ingilizce öğretimine ne gibi katkılarda bulunabileceğine ışık tutmaktır. Bu çalışmayla ayrıca SCI'yi pre-intermediate seviyeyi tamamlamış olan EAP öğrencilerine daha faydalı olacağı tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı geleneksel dil sınıfından konulu sınıflara ve gerçek dünyaya bir geçiş görev yapacak bir program hazırlamak olmuştur. Bu amaçla biri kontrol biri denek olmak üzere iki grup kullanılmıştır. Uygun öğrenciler seçmek üzere ingilizce yeterlik sınavı uygulanmıştır. Öğrencilerin ihtiyaç analizlerini yapmak için anketler kullanılmıştır. Denek grubunda kullanılmak üzere ders müfredatı hazırlanmıştır. Kontrol grubu herzamanki derslerine“Headway English”orta düzey ders kitabını kullanarak devam etmişlerdir. Kendilerine bir konu bir de dil sınavı verilmiştir. Son olarak denek grubuna ikinci bir anket uygulanarak öğrencilerin derslerdeki etkinlikleri değerlendirilmiştir. Giriş bölümünde (bölüm I), literatür taraması ilgili, problem, amaç, tezin çerçevesi ve muhtemel sonuçları sunulmaktadır, ikinci bölüm İAYDÖ'nun ne olduğunu açıklamaktadır. İAYDÖ'nun var olan modelleri, bu modellerin karşılaştırılması ve modellerin çalışma metodolojisi aynı bölümde ele alınmaktadır. Bu bölümde son olarak İAYDÖ ile ESP karşılaştırılmaktadır. Üçüncü bölümde, verilerin toplama metodu, anketler ve çalışmada uygulanan tüm sınav sonuçları değerlendirilirken sonuç bölümünde çalışmanın bir özeti, bazı gözlemler ve SCI uygulamasıyla ilgili öneriler yer alınmaktadır. Denek öğrenciler üzerinde uygulanan müfredat ile bazı örnek derslere dördüncü bölümde yer verilmektedir.146 Bu çalışmaya 5 adet ek bölüm ilave edilmiştir. Ek bölümde sırasıyla; 1 'inci anketin ingilizcesi ve Türkçe çevirisi, seviye tespit sınavı, örnek derslerin son sınavı, İngilizce dil sınavı ve 2'nci anketin İngilizcesi ve Türkçesi yer almaktadır.

147 ABSTRACT This study aims at highlighting the success an approach called Sheltered Content Instruction, one of the Content-Based Language Instruction models, can bring about in an ELT environment especially in countries like Turkey where English is neither widely used nor taught in depth during the primary and secondary school education. The study also has determined that Sheltered Content Instruction is more suitable for teaching EAP students after their completion of pre-intermediate level in a conventional language class. The purpose throughout this study has been to propose a kind of a programme that can serve as a bridge or transit from the conventional language class to a subject matter class and the real world. This was actualised through the formation of two (experimental and control) groups upon whom sample lessons were applied. A proficiency test was given to select eligible students. Questionnaires were administered as an instrument of students' needs analysis. A curriculum that served as a. skeleton of the lessons applied to the experimental group was designed. The control group was given the normal conventional language class using“Headway English course book: Intermediate.”At the end of the study two tests were conducted: A content and language test. Finally a second questionnaire was administered on the experimental group to find out the students' experiences during the lessons. In the introduction part (chapter I), a background to the study, the problem, aim and scope of the study and assumptions are presented. The second chapter focuses on what the approach, Content Based Language Instruction, is. The existing models of the approach, the comparison of the models, the implications and its teaching methodology are dealt with in the same section. The chapter ends with a discussion on CBI vs. ESP. The third chapter has the method of data collection, analysis and interpretation of the148 data collected through the questionnaires and tests. The chapter finishes with further remarks on both questionnaires and tests. In the fourth chapter, a curriculum and some sample lessons that were applied in the experimental class of the study are provided. The conclusion part gives the summary of the study, some observations and suggestions for implementing the Sheltered Content Instruction. The study has five appendices. Appendix I shows the first questionnaire both in the English and Turkish languages. Appendix II presents the proficiency test. Appendix III exhibits the content test.
