Özet
Bu çalışmada çağdaş heykelde alternatif bir malzeme olarak buzun kullanımı incelenmektedir. Geleneksel heykel malzemelerinin yanı sıra buz, geçicilik, kırılganlık ve zamanın etkileri gibi kavramları yansıtan yenilikçi bir ifade aracı olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Fiziksel özellikleri sayesinde sanatçılara estetik ve kavramsal anlamda geniş bir ifade yelpazesi sunan buz, şeffaf yapısı ve ışıkla etkileşimiyle hem görsel çekiciliği hem de derin bir anlam katmanını taşımaktadır. Ancak erime eğilimi nedeniyle buzdan yapılan eserler kalıcı sanat nesnelerinden ziyade geçici ve deneyim odaklı formlar olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu durum izleyiciyi anın farkında olmaya teşvik etmektedir. Dolayısıyla sanatta buz kullanımı yalnızca bir malzeme seçimi değil, aynı zamanda zamanın akışkanlığı, doğanın hassas dengesi ve değişim süreçleri üzerine güçlü bir ifade biçimidir. Çağdaş heykeltıraşlar arasında Jeff Stahl gibi sanatçılar, buzun benzersiz farklılıklarını kullanarak hem teknik olarak ustaca hem de derinlemesine anlamlı eserler yaratırlar. Stahl'ın eserlerinde, hareket eden figürler ve organik formlar, buzun kırılganlığına rağmen enerjisini ve değişkenliğini ortaya koyar. Buzun erime süreci yalnızca fiziksel bir dönüşüm olarak değil, aynı zamanda yoğunlukla vurgulanan bir sembol ve sıcaklığın geçiciliğini ifade eden güçlü bir metafor olarak değerlendirilir. Bu sanat anlayışı, izleyiciyi doğallığını korumaya ve buz heykelleri taşıyarak yalnızca görsel bir estetik öğeyi koruyarak sürekliliği sürdürmeye teşvik eder. Bu tez, çağdaş heykelde buz kullanımını teknik, estetik ve kavramsal açılardan incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma, buzu sanatsal bir malzeme olarak benimseyerek çağdaş heykel pratiğine getirilen yenilikleri ve ifade olanaklarını incelemektedir. Ayrıca, sanatın doğası, izleyiciyle etkileşimi ve çevresel duyarlılık, buzun erimesi ve geçici yapısı aracılığıyla tartışılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, buzun sanat pratiğinde alternatif bir malzeme olarak nasıl dönüştürücü bir rol oynadığı ve çağdaş heykele katkıları ayrıntılı olarak analiz edilmektedir.

This study focuses on the use of ice, one of the alternative materials in contemporary sculpture. In addition to traditional sculptural materials, ice stands out as an innovative tool that embodies concepts such as transience, fragility and the effect of time. The physical properties of ice offer artists a rich field of expression in terms of aesthetics and concepts. Thanks to its transparent structure and interaction with light, ice sculptures contain both visual appeal and a deep layer of meaning. However, the melting nature of ice positions these works as a temporary experience rather than a permanent art object, encouraging the viewer to live in the moment. In this context, the artistic use of ice is evaluated not only as a material choice, but also as a form of expression on the transience of time, the fragility of nature and the processes of transformation. Contemporary sculptors such as Jeff Stahl have creatively used these properties of ice to create works that are both technically masterful and philosophically profound. In Stahl's works, figures in motion or organic forms reflect the dynamism of life despite the fragility of ice. The process of melting ice serves not only as a physical transformation, but also as a symbol of environmental awareness and a metaphor for the passage of time. This approach takes ice sculptures beyond being merely an aesthetic experience, inviting the viewer to reflect on the preservation of the natural environment and the transient nature of life. This thesis aims to address the use of ice in contemporary sculpture in technical, aesthetic and conceptual dimensions. The study examines the innovations that ice as an artistic material brings to contemporary sculpture practice and the possibilities of expression in this field. It also discusses issues such as the nature of art, the relationship it establishes with the audience and environmental awareness through the melting nature and temporary structure of ice. In this context, how ice plays a transformative role as an alternative material in art practice and its contributions to contemporary sculpture are analyzed in depth.
