Industrial wastewater is a significant source of microplastics (MPs) entering treatment plants. This study assessed the abundance, characteristics, seasonal variations, and removal efficiencies of microplastics (MPs) in samples collected from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a textile industry-dominated organized industrial zone (OIZ) over one year. The average abundance of MPs in the WWTP influent was measured at 161.3 ± 74.9 MP/L, while the effluent contained 16.9 ± 6.2 MP/L. The concentration of MPs in the sludge cake was found to be 43.2 ± 17.1 MP/g of dry weight (dw). In both wastewater and sludge samples, the predominant shape of the MPs was fibrous, the most common color was transparent, and the typical size range was between 0.5 and 1 mm. The main types of MPs detected in the influent wastewater samples included polyethylene (PE) at 29.6%, polyester (PES) at 25.9%, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at 22.2%, and polypropylene (PP) at 14.8%. In the effluent samples, the distribution primarily consisted of PE at 41.9%, PET at 19.4%, and PP at 12.9%. For the sludge cake, the concentrations were PE at 67.9%, PET at 16.1%, and PES at 10.7%. Future research should focus on developing new technologies and methods to improve removal efficiencies and reduce the release of MPs into ecosystems, while also investigating the harmful effects of MPs on environmental health.
