Postcolonial theories, which began to develop in the second half of the 20th century, have reopened discussions on concepts such as Eurocentrism, locality, identity, language, gender, and the body by critically addressing the ongoing effects and shifting forms of colonialism. Through the subaltern perspective they introduce, these theories have made the polyphonic presence of“other”identities audible, playing a significant role in processes of social transformation. These new perspectives, which reverse the politics of the perceptible, make alternative ways of thinking about history and the social sphere possible. In this context, art emerges not merely as an aesthetic field, but as a political one that enables“new distributions of the perceptible.”Contemporary forms of art, rich and diverse in method, expand the field of artistic expression and action by constantly seeking new ways of influencing and being influenced, becoming an inseparable part of social thought and transformation. Performance art, arising alongside postcolonial theory as a contemporary art practice, produces powerful interventions that challenge the boundaries between the individual and the social and hold the potential to transform existing structures. Performances in which artists use their bodies as a means of expression cannot be considered independently of cultural, political, and emotional contexts. The“performative aesthetic”that has developed around performance redefines both the performative dimension of art and the emotional and social relationships it establishes with its audience. This thesis aims to explore the possibilities of expanding the current boundaries of performative expression by tracing its postcolonial resonances, which inevitably accompany our time, and reflecting on their implications for new imaginaries and creative practices. While engaging with the distinct political and aesthetic regimes of performativity and performance art in postcolonial discussions, the study seeks to explore the shared intentions and mutually nourishing aspects of these two fields on an emotional and geographical ground. By bringing these discussions into the context of Turkey, it also aims to introduce non-canonical readings into the field. In this direction, through close readings, the study will investigate how performative aesthetics and postcolonial imagination come together in the Turkish context, and how they might generate new possibilities together.
