Özet
Epiphaneia, günümüzde Hatay ilinin Erzin ilçesi sınırlarında, Gözeneler mevkiinde yer almaktadır. Antik dönemde Oiniandos adıyla bilinen kent, IV. Antiochos Epiphanes tarafından M.Ö. 175-164 yılları arasında, Kilikia bölgesini yeniden yapılandırma süreci kapsamında Epiphaneia adıyla yeniden kurulmuştur. Kent, Erken Bizans Dönemi boyunca bu adı korumuştur. Bu tez kapsamında, 2017-2021 yılları arasında bazilikal kilisede yürütülen kazılar sırasında bulunan 71 adet pişmiş toprak tuğla, beş ana başlık altında değerlendirilmiştir. Tezin birinci bölümünde, çalışmanın amacı, kapsamı ve yöntemi açıklanmıştır. İkinci bölümünde, Epiphaneia kentinin tarihi coğrafyası ile kentte şimdiye dek yürütülen arkeolojik araştırmalar ve kazı çalışmaları anlatılmıştır. Tezin üçüncü bölümünde, öncelikle erken dönem kilise mimarisi hakkında genel bir değerlendirme yapılmış; ardından Epiphaneia Kilisesi'nin mimari özellikleri ele alınmıştır. Mimari inceleme kapsamında, kilisenin narteks, naos ve bema bölümleri ile çevresinde yer alan, kazısı henüz tamamlanmamış mekânlar ile bu mekanlar ve bölümlerin zeminlerinde bulunan mozaik döşemeler incelenmiştir. Yapının işlevini yitirmesinin ardından, kilise 13-14. yüzyıllarda mezarlık olarak kullanılmış ve bu mezarlara ilişkin bilgilere yer verilmiştir. Tezin dördüncü bölümünde, Epiphaneia Kilisesi'ne ait bezemeli ve bezemesiz tuğlalar incelenmiş ve tuğlalar form ve bezeme özelliklerine göre değerlendirilmiş ve beş ana tipe ayrılarak genel bir değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Değerlendirme ve sonuç kısmı beşinci bölümü oluşturmaktadır. Bu bölümde, Epiphaneia Kilisesi ile çalışmada ele alınan tuğlalar; Kilikia bölgesi ve yakın coğrafyada bulunan benzer plan tipine sahip kiliseler ile mimariye bağlı plastik eserler karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. Yapı ve buluntuların mimari özellikleri, bezeme unsurları ele alınarak yapılan değerlendirmeler sonucunda, Epiphaneia Kilisesi ve tez konusu olan tuğlalar M.S. 5-6. yüzyıllara tarihlendirilmiştir.

Epiphaneia is located in Gözeneler locality, within the borders of Erzin district of Hatay province. The city, known as Oiniandos in antiquity, was re-established as Epiphaneia by Antiochus Epiphanes IV between 175-164 BC as part of the process of restructuring the Cilicia region. The city kept this name throughout the Early Byzantine Period. Information about Epiphaneia can be found in ancient written sources as well as in the observations of travelers who visited the region in the 19th and early 20th centuries and in the Tabula Peutingeriana map showing Roman roads. Rescue excavations were carried out in the region between 2006 and 2016; and since 2017, excavations have been carried out under the presidency of Hatay Museum with the participation of the museum. Within the scope of this thesis, 71 terracotta bricks found during the excavations carried out in the basilical church between 2017 and 2021 are evaluated under five main headings. In the first part of the thesis, the purpose, scope and methodology of the study are explained. In the second chapter, the historical geography of the city of Epiphaneia and the archaeological research and excavations carried out so far in the city are described. In the third part of the thesis, firstly a general evaluation of the early church architecture was made, and then the architectural features of the Church of Epiphaneia were discussed. Within the scope of the architectural analysis, the narthex, naos and bema sections of the church, as well as the surrounding spaces, the excavations of which have not yet been completed, and the mosaic pavements on the floors of these spaces and sections were analyzed. After the building lost its function, the church was used as a cemetery in the 13th-14th centuries and information about these graves is given. In the fourth chapter of the thesis, decorated and undecorated bricks belonging to the Epiphaneia Church were examined, and the bricks were evaluated according to their form and decorative features and classified into five main types for a general evaluation. Evaluation and conclusion constitute the fifth section. In this chapter, the Church of Epiphaneia and the bricks discussed in the study are analyzed in comparison with the churches with similar plan types in Cilicia and the nearby geography and the plastic artifacts related to the architecture. As a result of the evaluations made by considering the architectural features and decorative elements of the building and finds, the Church of Epiphaneia and the bricks which are the subject thesis were dated to the 5th-6th centuries AD.
