The Hydraulic jump is a widespread and significant phenomenon occurs in open channels. Hydraulic jumps are widely used in hydraulic structures to energy dissipation. Although the present literature related to effects of smooth channels have been reported, effects of roughened channels on hydraulic jump characteristics have not been investigated as comprehensive. The purpose of this study is an experimental investigation of effects of roughened channels on hydraulic jump properties. Gravel and artificial turf having 10 mm and 30 mm roughness height were used as roughness elements. 72 runs were carried out for smooth and roughened beds under same flow conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that the roughness on channels had positive effects on hydraulic jump properties, conjugate depth, hydraulic jump length and energy dissipation. Reduction in conjugate depth for gravel and artificial turf channels was found as respectively 12% and 18% compared with smooth channels. Gravel and artificial turf channels reduced the hydraulic jump length by 23% and 28%, respectively. The bed shear stress for gravel and artificial turf channels was found as 5-8 times and 7-13 times higher than smooth ones. Gravel and artificial turf channels dissipated 13.5% and 4% more energy than smooth channels. The flow depth before the sluice gate was 2% higher in gravel beds than in smooth beds, and 13% higher in artificial turf beds than in smooth beds.
