What if we aren't as fair as we believe when assessing our students' achievements? What if, without noticing, our preconceptions color our thoughts and decisions? Wouldn't that suggest we're not truly impartial in judging our students' success? In curriculum-based examinations, it is crucial that English teachers be aware of the halo effect and the factors that give rise to it, so that students' achievement in English can be assessed objectively. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to investigate the halo effect that teachers perceive when assessing English course achievement from students' point of view, identify the factors that give rise to the halo effect, and determine whether perceptions differ by gender, overall GPA (grade point average), grade level, or socioeconomic status etc. In this study, descriptive, correlational, and causal-comparative research designs were employed. Through descriptive research, the situation was examined as it was, the correlational survey model was used to determine the relationship between variables, and the causal-comparative model was applied to test whether there was a significant difference between the groups perceiving and not perceiving the halo effect. The population comprised high school students in Kayseri, and 3,100 of them, selected through simple random sampling, took part in the data collection process. The data, which was gathered via“Personal Information Form”and the“Perceived Halo Effect Scale,”was analysed using independent-samples t-tests and one-way ANOVA. And when the ANOVA revealed a significant difference, the Scheffé post-hoc test was applied to determine which group or group combinations accounted for the significant difference. As a result of the study, the halo effect was found to be more commonly perceived among female students, those whose parents are teachers, students with English grades between 85 and 100, and 12th-grade students. Perceived halo was lower in very large classes, whereas parents' education, family income and their acquaintance with the teacher produced no significant difference. These results will help us understand the tendencies of English teachers regarding assessment and evaluation, and will contribute to the development of suggestions aimed at improving the evaluation process.
