Prophecy is found in ancient Mesopotamia, the birthplace of Judaism, and in almost every ancient society. Prophecy, which was based on divination and ecstasy practices in ancient societies, continued to be institutionalized in Judaism as an appointment based on divine election and God's will. Has a woman been deemed worthy of the office of prophet, one of the highest religious offices in the patriarchal Jewish tradition? What is the importance and function of female prophets in Jewish history? Within the framework of this question, we explained the perception of women in Judaism, the importance and functions of female prophets in Jewish history with a historical, phenomenological method and an interdisciplinary perspective. Prophethood in Judaism began with the patriarch Abraham and ended with Malachi, the last prophet of the book of Neviim. After that, instead of prophets, the expectation of a savior Messiah began to develop. In Judaism, Moses is the highest ranking prophet and there is no male requirement to be a prophet. The Tanakh clearly states that Moses' sister Miriam, Judge Deborah and Huldah, who was King Josiah's counselor, were prophets. Talmudic literature adds to these names Sarah, the wife of the patriarch Abraham; Hannah, the mother of Samuel; Abigail, who prevented David from shedding blood and later married him; and Queen Esther, who entered the palace of King Ahasuerus of Persia and saved the Jews from slaughter. A negative perception of women prevails in Jewish tradition due to the story of Eve's sin in the second chapter of Genesis. However, in the Jewish sacred text Tanakh, it should be taken into consideration that women play important roles such as prophets, judges, warriors, etc. and that they lead their communities in troubled times.
