This study examines the issues of the nature of things and causality in al-Ghazālī's Tahāfut al-Falāsifa within a coherent philosophical and theological framework. In the history of philosophy, the question of whether things possess an intrinsic nature of their own has revealed a persistent tension between divine will and cosmic order, especially in the context of the God–world relationship. The research focuses on whether the natural world has an inherent essence and whether this essence can be grounded within the principle of necessary causality. In Islamic thought, the falāsifa explained the order of nature on the basis of necessary cause-and-effect relations, whereas the theologians traced this order back to God's continuous act of creation. al-Ghazālī reinterprets the tension between these two positions and argues that the connection between cause and effect should be understood not in terms of necessity but of habitual association. According to him, the so-called laws of nature are not ontologically necessary structures but habitual forms of God's ever-renewed will. In this context, a miracle does not signify the suspension of natural order but rather a different mode of manifestation of the same divine volition. Thus, by rejecting the notion of necessary causality, al-Ghazālī asserts that the true agent is God alone, while secondary causes serve merely as occasions or instruments. This position represents the most mature and systematic expression of the metaphysical doctrine known as occasionalism within Islamic philosophy. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that al-Ghazālī's stance is not merely a theological reflex but also an epistemological strategy, for in his view the guarantor of natural order lies not in the inherent nature of things but in the constant and sustaining will of God.
