Beykoz district of Istanbul, as one the residential areas largely poulated by people of the Black Sea origin, forming a strong cultural meomary space where the community continues its cultural performance forms such as daily life practices, music culture, and fellow citizens solidarity. Music, a mediator in the reestablishment and continuation of the Black Sea population, occupies a place in the community's memory not only as a aesthetic area of apprecation, but also as a part of belonging, origin, and coexistence. This study examines the musical practices of the Black Sea community living in Beykoz through Bruno Latour's“sociology of assemblages”approach, developed in 2005 within the framework of his Actor-Network Theory (ANT). Latour defines the social not merely as a fixed structure or the product of human actions, but as a collective field constructed through the continuous interaction and negotiation processes of human and non-human actors. In this context, music has been evaluated within a network structure that goes beyond being a cultural form of expression, involving human actors such as the kemençe player, DJ, wedding host, venue manager, audience, local community, and non-human actors such as the kemençe, sound system, venue acoustics, repertoire, digital platforms, and the wedding venue itself. This network structure makes it possible to reconstruction cultural production and social order through dynamic networks of relationships, rather than as fixed structures. The primary objective of the research is to analyze the forms of coexistence established by the Black Sea community through music, focusing on the interaction between actors. The study employs qualitative research methods and techniques, with ethnograpy as its primary methodology. Data was collected through non-participants observation and done-on-one interviews with 25 participants, and the data gathered was analyzed in relations to the problem at hand. The findigs reveal that Beykoz serves as an important 'micro public space' where Black Sea culture is reproduced, negotiated, and transmitted between different generations in Istanbul. Neighborhood ties were identified as the primary connector that establishing the community's social network, while music and material cultural elements were determined to be the 'translations' and 'mediation' mechanisms sustaining the identity of this network. The wedding halls, which are the focus of this study, stand out as heterogeneous spaces where cultural identity is renegotiated through the coexistence of the kemençe and DJ technology. Consequently, Black Sea music in Beykoz is assessed as a dynamic musical network that is constantly being reconstituted through encounters between different actors, rather than a fixed traditional structure. The study presents the research process within a holistic analytical framework under four main headings. The introduction, which is the first section of the thesis, discusses the process of developing the study, the problem area and the academic positioning of the research. The researcher's experience in Beykoz raises the question of how the Black Sea community establishes cultural continuity; the role of music in this process is identified as the main problem area of the study. The aim of the research and the research questions releated to this aim are defined; the scope of the study, including its universe and sample, is explained. The qualitative character of the study, conducted using an ethnographic methods, is revealed; data collection techniques and basic information about the field are provided. In the theoretical subheading of the chapter, Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and the sociology of assemblages, which were determined as the research theory, are explained; the basic concepts of the theory used the study, such as actor, network, translation, and mediation are defined. It is noted that Latour first presented his Actor-Network Theory as a systematic synthesis in his lectures in 1996 and subsequently presented these texts in a comprehensively manner in his 2005 work,“Reassembling the Social: An Introduction to Actor-Network Theory.”It has been stated that field observations, academic reading in the field of sociology, and the need for interdisciplinary thinking have influenced the orientation of this study toward this approach. In the final subsection of the theoretical section, the applicability of this theory in the field of musicology is evaluated through the literature. Looking at studies in the international literature, the works of researchers such as Antonie Hennion, Georgina Born, and Eliot Bates which focus on the relationships between music, technology, space, and the listener, are cited as examples. In Türkiye, the limited number of studies conducted in the field of musicology through ANT are included. In this context, brief informationis is provided about Abdullah Akat's doctoral thesis, which examines the process of change in Eastern Black Sea music within the framework of relational perspective; Nihan Tahtaişleyen's doctoral study, conducted through the archive of ethnomusicologist Kurt Reinhard; and finally, Faruk Çalışkan's doctoral study, which analyzes the circulation of âşık music through digital and cultural networks. The secod section provides information on the historical development, georaphical location and demographic structure of Beykoz in order to familiarize the reader with the area where the research was conducted. The Black Sea origin population in Beykoz's neighborhoods and the socio-cultural expression of this community are highlighted, it is revealed that the phenomenon of migration since 1950s has transformed the social structure of Beykoz, resulting in the impression of a“second homeland”in the neigborhoods through concepts such as neighborly relations, sense of belonging, and cultural continuity. Thea analysis examined how identity is reproduced in the community's daily life practices through cultural elements such as language, food, clothing, social relations, and music; thus, the field is presented not only geographically but also as a cultural and relational ground. This third section presents the functioning of Black Sea music in Beykoz through everday practices. Musical relationship within the wedding venue, where the musical network is established, are evaluated under the concept of“network formation”; musicians (kemençe players-DJs), listeners, kemençe, wedding hall operators, venue, technology, sound system, and other human and non-human actors are analyzed to see how they come together to form a negotiation. Under the heading“Mediators of Identity,”it is shown that music, instruments, and technological tools are not merely instrumental elements but active actors in the reproduction of cultural identity. It is revealed that elements such as the kemençe, DJ technology, repertoire preferences, and sound systems function as mediators that establish and sustain the community's sense of belonging. Another subheading of the chapter addresses wedding venues as the area where the musical network is most intensely visible. Wedding venues have been evaluated as heterogeneous spaces where the performances of two instruments, the kemençe and the DJ, are also in constant interaction. In this regard, weddings have been defined as social spaces where cultural identity is reconstructed and forms of communal coexistence are produced, in addition to being venues for entertainment. Finally, under the subheading“the community's musical habits,”participants' with technological platforms and ways of positioning music dayily life have been examined. In the final section of the study, the discussions presented throughout the entire study are evaluated together with the field findings. The cultural continuity, sense of belonging, and forms of coexistence established by the Black Sea community living in Beykoz through music are addressed holistically; the findings reveal that Black Sea music in Beykoz is not a fixed structure but a dynamic musical network that is constantly reshaped by the influence of different actors. In this respect, the study aims to contribute to the field at a theoretical level by providing an example of the applicability of Actor-Network Theory in the field of musicology. One of the research questions addressed in this study is how the Black Sea community living in Beykoz positions itself in the daily life practices of Beykoz. The answer to this question, based on the findings, reveals that music is not only an aesthetic expression but also a central practice that shapes the community's sense of belonging and keeps its cultural memory alive. Weddings, in particular, function as a mediating space where Black Sea identity is constantly reproduced. Another research question is through which actors and how do musical practices involve an network of interaction. The analysis conducted within the framework of Actor-Network, the main theory of the study, shows that music is created through the mutual negotiation processes of numerous human and non-human actors, such as musicians, kemençe, DJ technology, sound systems, the acoustics of the venue, repertoire preferences. This approach ansures that the music produced is not viewed through the lens of tradition-change or transformation based on a single factor, but rather as a process that is constantly negotiated and coexists. Additionally, wedding venues stand out as spaces where these interaction are intensely observed. The coexistence of kemençe and DJ performances creates not only musical diversity but also a cultural space where intergenerational reconciliation are embondied. In this respect, weddings are considered heterogeneous social spaces that go beyond being venues for entertainment and instead reestablish the collective identity of the community. Consequently, this study presents Black Sea music in Beykoz not as a static traditional from, but as a cultural network constantly reshaped and negotiated through the encounters of different actors. This approach has both allowed for a more layered reading of the fieldwork data and demonstrated that Actor-Network Theory offers a powerful analytical tool for musicology and ethnomusicology studies.
