In today's world, the demand for rare earth elements (REEs), which are of vital importance in sectors such as green transition, defense, energy storage, and high technology, is escalating rapidly. Geographical and geopolitical risks associated with regions hosting primary ore resources, coupled with significant environmental impacts and complex processing requirements, render the recovery of these elements from secondary sources a strategic necessity. In this context, smartphone waste presents significant potential due to REE containing components such as Nd-Fe-B magnets, smart phone's display glass, speakers, and camera modules. However, conventional hydrometallurgical methods suffer from disadvantages such as intensive acid usage, high chemical consumption, and low selectivity. Conversely, the environmentally friendly, modular, and scalable recovery of REEs can be achieved through the synergistic use of metal organic framework (MOF) based membranes, which provide selective separation, and low toxicity deep eutectic solvents (DESs). In this thesis, a two stage, integrated method has been developed for the recovery of rare earth elements from e-waste components obtained from android smartphones (specifically a display/hardware mixture). This method consists of a leaching process using a p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) and choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES), followed by a selective capture and separation process on a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) reinforced with phosphonic acid functionalized MOF particles. Inspired by the rationally designed nanotrap approach, nanotrap regions that ensure strong and dense surface coordination between REEs and the membrane have been integrated into the porous structure of the MOF. Consequently, selectivity against co-dissolving ions such as Nd²⁺, In²⁺, and Dy³⁺ has been significantly enhanced. The leaching process was carried out in three main stages; pre-treatment (disassembly of devices, separation of smart displays, and grinding), preparation of the deep eutectic solvent (DES), and optimization of leaching conditions. The DES was formulated with PTSA and choline chloride components to obtain a viscous mixture. Parameters such as temperature, experimental duration and solid/liquid ratio were systematically tested. The solution content was monitored via the ICP-OES characterization method, while the leaching mechanism in select samples was analyzed using FTIR spectra and pH/conductivity measurements. As a result, high solubility of REEs was achieved, and a chemical environment suitable for the membrane system, where co-dissolving matrix ions were minimized, was obtained. In the separation and capture process, zinc-based nanotrap-functionalized MOF particles were incorporated into a polymer carrier with high chemical and mechanical durability to prepare a mixed-matrix membrane (MMM). The membrane structure was optimized by considering MOF loading rate, film thickness, porogen, and the conditions of the solutions involved in the process. Flux, rejection, adsorption capacity (qe), and distribution selectivity were evaluated in a standard membrane test cell. Additionally, studies were conducted on the effects of pH, metal-organic framework loading rate, and temperature. Kinetic and isotherm behaviors were analyzed using the pseudo-second-order rate model and Langmuir/Freundlich isotherms, thereby distinguishing diffusion-based changes from complexation-based changes occurring within the membrane. During the characterization process, the crystal structure and chemical composition of the MOF and leaching solution were verified via XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses. The morphology and pore structure of the materials were examined in detail using SEM, EDS, TEM, and BET (nitrogen adsorption) methods. Furthermore, the rheological and thermal properties and viscosity of the DES phase were measured, and these data were correlated with the kinetics of the leaching process. Feed, permeate, and condensed phase streams were quantitatively monitored via ICP-OES analyses; the obtained concentration data were utilized to calculate and verify the system's mass balance. The rheological analysis of the ChCl:PTSA (1:2) system revealed an Arrhenius-type flow behavior with a calculated activation energy (Ea) of 38 kJ/mol. This energy barrier highlights a significant sensitivity to temperature, as evidenced by the sharp decrease in viscosity at 80°C (66.81 mPa·s) compared to room temperature, which is essential for accelerating mass transfer and leaching kinetics. Furthermore, FTIR spectra confirmed that despite the high acidity and molar ratio variations, the fundamental hydrogen bonding network and structural integrity of the DES remain stable during the solvoleaching of smartphone screen waste. Physical characterization of the synthesized NCU-1 confirmed high crystallinity through XRD patterns, with a calculated d-spacing of 4.194 Å representing the structural periodicity of the coordination polymer. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms exhibited a Type IV behavior, and the BET specific surface area was determined to be 333.0 m²/g, confirming a well-developed mesoporous architecture. BJH analysis further defined a dominant pore size distribution centered at 4.5 nm with a total pore volume of 0.4361 cm³/g, ensuring an accessible internal environment for REE ions. The“nanotrap”functionality within the framework is chemically driven by uncoordinated carboxylate oxygens and triazole nitrogens, identified via XPS at ≈531.5 eV (O 1s) and ≈399.2 eV (N 1s). According to the HSAB principle, these sites act as hard bases that form strong coordination bonds with the hard-acid trivalent REE cations. Steric compatibility within the ≈4 Å pockets further favors the entrapment of LREEs, such as Nd³⁺ and Ce³⁺, over heavier elements based on the“lock-and-key”fit of their ionic radii, providing the molecular basis for high selectivity. Performance evaluation of the MMM demonstrated exceptional chemical resilience, as the NCU-1 framework maintained its crystal structure even after prolonged exposure to pH 1 conditions. The integration of these MOF particles into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) support through the NIPS process ensures a uniform distribution and structural stability, allowing the membrane to act as an effective selective barrier. This robustness, combined with efficient regeneration capabilities via diluted acid elution, confirms the long-term cycle stability and industrial scalability of the proposed recovery process. The obtained results demonstrate that the PTSA and choline chloride based deep eutectic solvent (DES) provides an effective medium for the leaching of smartphone electronic waste, while the MOF-based mixed-matrix membranes incorporating the zinc-based nanotrap structure significantly enrich rare earth elements compared to co-dissolved matrix ions. Through the joint optimization of leaching and membrane parameters, the study aimed to achieve high REE recovery rates, low chemical consumption, minimal secondary waste generation, and high purity REE solutions from the recovery process using reusable membranes; suitable process conditions supporting this aim were determined. In conclusion, this thesis presents an innovative perspective and process that integrates deep eutectic solvent (DES) based hydrometallurgy with MOF based selective membrane technology as a low environmental impact, scalable, and sustainable method for rare earth element recovery. The original contributions of the thesis include: the development of a specific leaching recipe and associated process map for electronic waste specific to Android smartphones; the elucidation of the relationship between composition, selectivity, and recovery in the zinc centered nanotrap MOF-MMM system; the chemical and realistic explanation of REE selectivity in multi-ionic environments; and the determination of practical process design relative values regarding membrane efficiency and cycle stability. Quantitative data and optimum conditions regarding all these findings are presented in detail in the experimental sections of the thesis.
