Özet
Bu çalışma, Nuri Bilge Ceylan'ın Kuru Otlar Üstüne adlı filminin, Türkçeden Fransızcaya yapılan altyazı çevirilerinde kültürel ögelerin aktarımını incelemektedir. Pedersen'in stratejileri çalışmanın temelini oluştururken, kuramsal çerçevesi Yorumlayıcı Çeviri Kuramına dayanmaktadır. Filmdeki kültürel ögeler tespit edilerek bunların Fransızca altyazılarda hangi stratejilerle karşılandığı incelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında belirlenen kültürel öge kategorileri ile bu ögelerin erek dile aktarımında kullanılan stratejiler, Jan Pedersen ile gerçekleştirilen kişisel görüşmeler doğrultusunda, onun uzmanlık bilgisi, yönlendirmeleri ve onun ele aldığı stratejiler esas alınarak belirlenmiştir. Bununla birlikte, çalışmada yalnızca mevcut sınıflandırmalarla yetinilmeyerek, Kuru Otlar Üstüne filminin bağlamsal ve kültürel özelliklerinden hareketle film özelinde bir kültürel öge sınıflaması geliştirilmiş ve çözümleme bu özgün sınıflama temelinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan çözümlemeler çevirmenin kültürel ögeleri aktarırken farklı stratejiler arasında seçim yaptığını ve bu tercihlerin ögenin türü, bağlamsal işlevi ve altyazı çevirisinin teknik kısıtlamaları tarafından şekillendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmada, filmler aracılığıyla görsel-işitsel çevirinin kültürler arası etkileşimde önemli bir işlev üstlendiği belirtilmiş ve farklı kültürlere özgü unsurların izleyiciye aktarımında altyazı çevirisinin katkısı vurgulanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler en sık başvurulan yöntemlerin genelleme ve değiştirme olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu stratejilerin özellikle günlük konuşma kalıpları, deyimler ve toplumsal kodların erek dile aktarımında işlevsel bir rol üstlendiği anlaşılmıştır. Atlama stratejisinin, kaynak kültüre özgü ama erek izleyici için anlaşılması güç ögelerde ya da zaman/alan sınırlamalarının baskın olduğu anlarda devreye girdiği düşünülmektedir. Daha düşük oranda kullanılan tutma, doğrudan çeviri ve yerleşik eşdeğer stratejileri ise daha çok özel adlar, coğrafi isimler ve evrensel karşılığı bulunan ögelerde tercih edilmiştir. Sınırlı örneklerde görülen özelleştirme stratejisi ise ek bilgi ya da açıklama sunarak anlamın pekiştirilmesini sağlamıştır. Kültürel öge kategorileri açısından bakıldığında argo ve deyim gruplarında dönüştürücü stratejilerin yoğunlaştığı, buna karşılık özel adlar kategorisinde sadık aktarımların öne çıktığı görülmüştür. Bu sonuç, her kültürel ögenin aynı yöntemle çevrilemeyeceğini, çeviri tercihlerinin doğrudan ögenin doğasına göre belirlendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmanın özgün katkısı, Nuri Bilge Ceylan'ın Kuru Otlar Üstüne filminin kültürel öge aktarımı bağlamında ilk kez sistematik biçimde incelenmesi ve Pedersen'in tüm stratejilerini kapsayan bütünsel bir çözümleme sunmasıdır. Dahası, bir film altyazısı örneği üzerinden Pedersen'in stratejilerinin Yorumlayıcı Çeviri Kuramı çerçevesinde birlikte değerlendirilmesi, alanyazında ilk kez gerçekleştirilen bir yaklaşım olarak dikkat çekmektedir. Böylece hem altyazı çevirilerinde kültürel öge aktarımına ilişkin daha geniş bir bakış açısı sunulmuş hem de Yorumlayıcı Çeviri Kuramı ile strateji uygulamaları arasındaki ilişki somut verilerle ortaya konmuştur. Söz konusu çalışma, Pedersen'in strateji modelini Yorumlayıcı Çeviri Kuramı ile ilişkilendirerek, Türkçeden Fransızcaya yapılan altyazı çevirilerinde kültürel öge aktarımını bütüncül biçimde ele alan ilk çalışmalardan biridir. Bu çalışma, çok sayıda örnek üzerinden yüzeysel genellemeler üretmek yerine, tek bir film üzerinden yürütülen ayrıntılı çözümleme yoluyla altyazı çevirisinde kültürel öge aktarımının stratejik ve bağlamsal boyutlarını görünür kılmayı amaçlamıştır. Gelecek çalışmalarda farklı türlerdeki filmler, çok dilli karşılaştırmalar ve izleyici alımlamasına odaklanan araştırmaların bu alana daha geniş ve derinlikli bir bakış açısı kazandıracağı düşünülmektedir.

This study examines the transfer of cultural elements in the French subtitles of Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film About Dry Grasses, translated from Turkish into French. While Pedersen's subtitling strategies constitute the methodological foundation of the study, its theoretical framework is based on the Interpretive Theory of Translation. Cultural elements identified in the film were analyzed in terms of the strategies employed to render them in the French subtitles. The categorization of cultural elements and the strategies used in their transfer into the target language were determined on the basis of personal interviews conducted with Jan Pedersen, drawing on his expert knowledge, guidance, and the strategies he proposes. Moreover, rather than relying solely on existing classifications, this study develops a film-specific classification of cultural elements based on the contextual and cultural characteristics of About Dry Grasses, and the analysis is conducted on the basis of this original classification. The analyses reveal that the translator makes deliberate choices among different strategies when transferring cultural elements, and that these choices are shaped by the type of cultural element, its contextual function, and the technical constraints inherent in subtitling. The study emphasizes that audiovisual translation, particularly through films, plays a significant role in intercultural interaction, highlighting the contribution of subtitling to the transmission of culture-specific elements to the target audience. The findings indicate that generalization and substitution are the most frequently employed strategies. These strategies prove to be particularly functional in the transfer of everyday speech patterns, idiomatic expressions, and social codes into the target language. The omission strategy appears to be employed mainly in cases where culture-specific elements are difficult for the target audience to comprehend or when temporal and spatial constraints become dominant. Strategies such as retention, direct translation, and official equivalent, which are used less frequently, are primarily preferred for proper names, geographical references, and elements with universally recognized equivalents. The specification strategy, observed in limited instances, contributes to meaning reinforcement by providing additional information or clarification. From the perspective of cultural element categories, it is observed that transformative strategies are predominantly used in the translation of slang and idiomatic expressions, whereas faithful transfer strategies are more prominent in the category of proper names. This finding demonstrates that cultural elements cannot be translated using a single uniform method and that translation decisions are directly influenced by the nature of the elements themselves. The original contribution of this study lies in the fact that Kuru Otlar Üstüne by Nuri Bilge Ceylan is examined for the first time in a systematic manner with regard to the transfer of cultural elements in subtitle translation, and that a comprehensive analysis encompassing all of Pedersen's strategies is provided. More importantly, the joint analysis of Pedersen's strategies within the framework of the Interpretive Theory of Translation through a film subtitle case represents a pioneering approach in the field. In this way, the study not only offers a broader perspective on the transfer of cultural elements in subtitle translation but also establishes a strong link between the Interpretive Theory of Translation and strategic practices based on empirical data. Accordingly, this research constitutes one of the first studies to address the transfer of cultural elements in Turkish-French subtitle translation by associating Pedersen's strategy model with the Interpretive Theory of Translation. Rather than producing superficial generalizations based on a large number of examples, this study aims to make visible the strategic and contextual dimensions of cultural item transfer in subtitling through an in-depth analysis conducted on a single film. Future studies focusing on films of different genres, multilingual comparative analyses, and audience reception are expected to provide a broader and more in-depth perspective on this field.
